If they are being honest that is. Very Warhol, not sure how well it would work with other artists though.

None of the buyers do, so it's not really a gamble as there is no 'winner'. It would be really interesting if the organisers were also blind to where the original ends up.
If that is the case, and assuming the copies are near enough imperceptible from the original, then you've replaced 1 original with 1000 pseudo-originals.
I that's a better way of ending up with a share of a Warhol than cutting it into a thousand pieces (as I believe has been done with some prints)
