I think this is a very good idea. There has been a lot of people putting up links without calling out that they are referral links. I do not click on Discord links unless the person who shared the link mentions what it is for.

From my understanding, Clicking the link allows you to join that specific discord channel to allow you to join that community where information, news etc is shared and then yourself can take part in the competition by sharing your own link.
Almost how retweeting / reposting works to enter a competition on other platforms… first you most be following the person to retweet/ repost.
So in answer to your question in most instances clicking the link isn’t necessarily a waste of time but won’t enter you into that competition, but may help a friend out.

For me personally I don’t really like the discord platform. I don’t like it’s user interface and don’t find it particularly user friendly. I’ve tried using it various times - initially for gaming, and recently for the art community and NFT’s - however, I’ve again not logged in for months as I find it hard work and tedious to use.
I do however, understand Dmatts explanation and can see the positive uses and benefits, I’ve just decided it not for me personally, I would recommend at least having a look at maybe some smaller channels for some favourite artists before completely dismissing it so you can make your own mind on it, as I would hate to dissuade you from my explanation and experience alone.
