About 1/3 of the stuff went unsold (including a Barry McGee). 1/3 went for less than estimate (Dash Snow, Terrence Koh, Dan Colen), and the rest went for about asking price (except for a Marilyn Minter and a Terrence Koh which did well).
The auction itself had a lot of cutting edge stuff in it and there was a lot of hype buildup behind many of the artists. It was sad to see this kind of turnout for some of America's most promising young contemporary artists.

There is nothing wrong with it UNLESS you are a speculator. Speculators are happy to keep buying in as long as lots are hammering for multiples of thier high estimate (one of the many reasons the auction houses more often than not set teaser ranges). However, once you get a few sales with many bought in lots coupled with ones that are hammering withing range, the speculators will begin exiting stage left. Whether we are a long ways from that inflection point, at it, or past it is up for debate depending on the level of work in discussion. Regardless, that day will come and I personally look forward to it as you have to keep some powder dry so that you can buy the quality work others are forced to sell when that day arrives.

Contemporary art auctions over the past 7 years have had nowhere near a 30% BI average. The evening sales have been less than 10% and I don't know what the morning and day sales have been but can guarantee you that they've been nowhere near 30% at the top houses (Christies and Sotheby's). The second tier houses like Bonhams and PdP have certainly had higher BI rates because they simply don't get anywhere near the quality of work on average as the the premier shops. Still, I would be surprised to learn that even at their level that 30% has been common lately.

Get serious, these guys are represented by some major gallery muscle around the world and in the Saatchi collection etc. I'll take bets right now that these guys are still around in 20 years while 90% of the BS artists that are faves on this forum aren't.
