Martin Whatson โข THE CRACK & SNEAK PEAK , by tranito on Dec 24, 2021 6:57:53 GMT 1, You don't get it. Vault sales set nothing. The market sets the prices. Then the vault sells at market prices. It's not the other way around. The vault is pointless if a print didn't appreciate in value on the secondary market first and became somewhat scarce. GP can't sell a print on the vault for ยฃ500 if there's a ton on eBay at cost for ยฃ195. And if GP do sell a print (originally ยฃ195) at ยฃ500 on the vault, well good for them and good for everyone who already owns the print, because guess what, it most likely means that everybody's ยฃ195 print is now at least close to being worth ยฃ500. Not bad. Now stop it with this reprint nonsense. How many prints from this outfit do you own?
I'll show you my collection if you show me yours. You probably don't own much, as you sure sound like you know very little about what you're talking about. Bad blood with Giancarlo? Blacklisted?

Martin Whatson โข THE CRACK & SNEAK PEAK , by Acme Thunderer on Dec 24, 2021 7:32:14 GMT 1, fairxat - when you refer to un-numbered prints in vault sales, you are referring to PPโs (printer proofs) and not to be confused with APโs. All printers can be allowed to print 10% of PPโs as extra on top of the print run (subject to contracts?). Some printers number these, some donโt (like GP). So, if there is a print run of 250, there could be 25 PPโs. This is why they will be drip-fed to appear in vault sales, or sometimes appear at other galleries.
At the end of the day (i.e. - a hint so you stop whining!) they have made an un-numbered print available to as many people as possible. Fantastic! It really is not something to get frustrated about. Buyers know they are not signed and un-numbered and are willing to pay, and have. They wonโt reprint them in the same format again so donโt spread any more false information.

Says who? And thatโs not even the main issue here, issue is if they sold x, they could easily print 10/20/30/40/50% amount on top of it and put it in the vault later on. And later on no one knows how many units they might have in the vault sale, just as they donโt know how many they just sold and gonna print.

Nice prints I bought one and now wish I had bought both If they were open edition I would be able to buy today but oh no itโs sold out

I donโt know, why people always must search for something bad in things like that.

Martin Whatson โข THE CRACK & SNEAK PEAK , by churchwood on Dec 24, 2021 13:40:35 GMT 1, Be interesting to see how many people be rubbishing them actually bought them anyway.
I guess if everyone is negative then potentially those on the fence won't buy and then ultimately the final edition is smaller, herd mentality and all that.
It's not massive but it's still a 7 layer screen so some work has gone into these and apart from the lack of Sig (imagine if they did end up being signed) and the larger edition size, these aren't a great deal different technically from the standard MW releases.
Standard releases are a lot more expensive plus pretty damn hard to get too so these actually seemed a not bad pickup for those after some MW at Xmas.

Martin Whatson โข THE CRACK & SNEAK PEAK , by tranito on Dec 24, 2021 14:44:18 GMT 1, Salty people will complain. Informed, salty people complain, have a reason to do so and make sense out of it. Uninformed, salty people complain, mix everything together and spread disinformation. Open edition, numbering of prints, GP business practices (the vault).. it's a pain to read some of these posts.
Let's sum it up.
-The "open" edition issue.
-A lof of confusion came from the fact many members thought this was a traditional open edition, which keeps being reprinted to meet demand (and therefore can't appreciate in value and has no aftermarket as it keeps being available at cost from primary source). This edition is a time limit edition, which means it's only open during the time window. It stays open for a short while, but once time is up, it closes and becomes a limited edition. Everyone who wanted one could buy one during the time window, but once it's closed, it's sold out. No more are printed. You can't buy at cost from source anymore. There is a secondary market for these. Time limit editions and open editions are 2 very different animals.
-The fact "these will be unnumbered" issue.
-That's a totally different issue and was mixed with the confusion around the nature of the edition, because open editions are always unnumbered by nature, as limited time editions are usually numbered after the window is closed. It derailed from there to GP's business practices bla bla.. it's the same song every time there is a vault sale anyway.. it has nothing to do with the fact these are unnumbered. GP can and does keep prints for their vault whether the main run is numbered or not. Get over it. Nothing to do with this particular release. The vault makes sense for the rare stuff. Not an issue with a time limit meant for everyone to finally have a chance at having a long coveted MW edition.

I believe they are introducing embossing within the image for the first time, so if there's anything different technically, it's actually more, not less. This should add a 3D effect at the junction of the curtain/crack vs the graffitis "behind" them. I don't think they've done this with previous editions, not with MW, nor anyone else, though I could be wrong. It'll be interesting to see how it ends up looking up close.

At least the Butterfly prints from 2017 were already embossedโฆ But donโt know any others.

Martin Whatson โข THE CRACK & SNEAK PEAK , by ecudat on Dec 24, 2021 15:30:52 GMT 1, The US market havenโt just discovered Martin Whatson - they have been collecting him for years and are hoovering up many of the OGs and prints. The market is just as strong there as it is in UK/Europe so nothing new. Past few years most of the American buyers bought in, once they are aware of constant releases of old images and unnumbered pps they wonโt be hoovering up those prints. The highest prices are all driven by American buyers Many of them have been in the market for years from what I've seen. More to the point, many of them have canvases and other OGs (as with some Europeans) from gallery shows. And they are also in for GP lotteries when there are new images released.
Martin's art isn't for everyone - it depends if the graffiti/tag style appeals to you and where you think that works - for example, I don't get many of the animal ones, except the Stag, which is a very nice piece of art in general. But for example, The Cycle, OSS and the various wall/curtain ones do appeal to me for various reasons. But for those who want to collect his work and can't then ยฃ200-ยฃ250 give or take taxes (depending on where you live) if you like the image is a no-brainer as the other stuff is hard to come by without spending ยฃ1k (for a mini) or ยฃ2k+ for a full-size print. The fact that it's unnumbered and unsigned isn't an issue because 1, hopefully those people are buying for their walls and 2, realistically, I've already seen 3 people say they missed out as weren't online for those 12 hours, so there will be price appreciation because GP have confirmed that THESE PRINTS WILL NOT BE REPRINTED.
Hope everyone who ordered them enjys them when they arrive in Jan/Feb! Happy Christmas!

They sold a shit load that's for sure. That's a shit load of people who are happy to add a Whatson to their collection after missing out over and over again. Oh no. Plenty of people bought them no doubt. Collectors though? Not many. These will be all over ebay. The market has completely changed.

Not many collectors? Lol. When I say a collector I mean someone who will be happy to keep the print as opposed to flip it. I could have said someone who appreciates his art. A fan, a collector. Not a flipper. They sold thousands and thousands of each. Even if 100 turn up on eBay tomorrow, that's not even close to 10% of the whole run. 90%-95% of these have been sold to people who will be very happy to add this to their collection, maybe hang their first Whatson on their wall. Ok, so I'm walking in a beautiful neighbourhood in Vancouver and I'm seeing a gigantic, brand new, house. My friend asks me how much do I think it's worth. I say I have no clue but it's several millions, meaning I can't guess the ceiling, but the floor is easy. He says bravo Captain Obvious!! Not exactly pulling out a number from my ass! More than an educated guess. Just utmost evidence based on known, relevant data. If you think they sold 987 and 1147 of these, keep thinking so. Don't really care.

I couldn't give a fuck how many they've sold any more than I care how many cheeseburgers McDonalds have sold this week.
You, on the other hand, have previously stated as fact - on at least two occasions in this thread - that "they have sold thousands and thousands of each print".
It would now appear that these numbers of yours were, to use your vernacular, pulled from "known relevant data" stored in your very own ass.
I'm done here, merry fucking Christmas.

So the total number is at least >1700 (Independent on the version)โฆ

Martin Whatson โข THE CRACK & SNEAK PEAK , by Jaylove on Dec 25, 2021 1:14:10 GMT 1, Oh no. "The market has completely changed"?? What is that supposed to mean? Damn dude, did I offend you? Anyone who has been paying attention and sees how other markets have changed knows exactly WTF I'm talking about.
