Can anyone identify this piece for me?, by ecudat on Jan 3, 2022 19:05:24 GMT 1, Hi all,
I saw this about two years ago at the London Art Fair and it kind of blew my mind as I hadn't realised any of the spot works had this crazy 3d/floating effect. So if anyone can tell me more about that or point me in direction of where to find out more, that would be cool.
I'm specifically wondering what this piece or any set that it comes from might be called? (I can't zoom in without the words going all blurry on the little info blob...
Thanks in advance

That is his 2014 print Mescalin. Digital print on plastic, edition of 100. With a lenticular effect :-)

Thank you, that's super-helpful! Any idea of a fair value for one now (or a range?) in secondary market (non-gallery priced!)? Looks like one sold on here last autumn for maybe ยฃ12.5k (or presumably close to that.)

Any idea of a fair value for one now (or a range?) in secondary market (non-gallery priced!)? Looks like one sold on here last autumn for maybe ยฃ12.5k (or presumably close to that.) That blows your mind. Really? I admit when in person and huge like in the tate they look good but sorry that does nothing for me and at 12.5k it would be an easy pass. Yes it surprised me in person that it had that effect. I was a very new collector then and, as far as I knew about Hirst and his spots, they were just straightforward spots. I wasn't aware of any lenticular work (or even that that was a thing to be perfectly honest).
Anyway, that's the thing about art as we all know. Without having seen any of Hirst's other work in the flesh, I can't comment properly on it, but certainly on screens, it doesn't look that special. Bear in mind, people are paying 6-8k for the recent releases that are all the same, (but different) and with editions sizes of 6 x 1000 etc...
Presumably you like some of his work (as you're in this part of the forum), so as ever, two people can like/dislike different things and value things differently.

I'm not his biggest fan but you're quite right - to each their own. Aren't they just on either side of perspex or a separate layer underneath? I don't necessarily think they're lenticular as such. So do these appear to have movement when viewing? Lol I thought from your other message that you'd seen a bigger version of these in a gallery. The way I saw it, once I was within a metre or two of it, the spots all seemed to be floating. I don't know how it was done, but you should try to see one if you can as you'll see why my mind was blown. Definitely makes sense why it is named Mescaline and the similar one is named Psilocybin

Definitely makes sense why it is named Mescaline and the similar one is named Psilocybin That's my guess anyway. Some with a slight bokeh. Do you like Kenji Hoshi? Much cheaper alternative if you're into that aesthetic. Funny enough I have a Kenji canvas with the framer. (It's a white background and I felt it needed lifting a bit). But it's not at all the same effect. The Kenji gives a 3d effect from distance. But the Hirst looks flat from a distance and then close up isn't just a 3D effect, it's literally floating in the air in front of you. It's really hard to describe. It's almost like when you get a headrush or dehydrated and see spots floating around.
I get why you suggested Kenji and as you can guess, I think it's a really clever thing that he does, but it is quite different. And yes big difference in price, but if also seen as something on an investment then I could justify it, as long as I felt I was paying fair market price.

Can anyone identify this piece for me?, by Georgie Poppit on Jan 4, 2022 12:16:48 GMT 1, Always felt this edition was a missed opportunity as it looks terrible in person. If the technology couldn't achieve a good result it should have been binned.
