Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by Daniel Silk on Jan 4, 2022 22:28:01 GMT 1, DISCUSS
BANKSY is seen by most as a fashionable Artist, a fashionable subject to talk about, with his fame grown from having a secret identity and his followers viewed as people who are on trend, on the pulse of whatโs fresh. Do you think it will always remain like that or has Banksy and his images become so well known, that everyone and their granny has a Banksy on the wall, thus making him no longer fashionable? or as long as he continues to produce new Art, new Projects, will he always remain on trend, fashionable?

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by Daniel Silk on Jan 4, 2022 23:01:20 GMT 1, I guess as long as he keeps coming up with something fresh and on the pulse of current news, then he can continue to ride that wave, but itโs something I think he is at risk of loosing focus, loosing track of what really attracts his followers. If it becomes stale, then itโs very difficult to regain the credibility.
Just my opinion.

'cuse me. Are you the same person who recommended Hirst as a top 10 artist to invest in this week? ๐
My personal opinion is that Bansky will be pretty much the only artist that is frequently discussed on this forum that Chinese school kids will know about in 30 years time.

I would like to be in possession of a Banksy but I will never have the means to pay a real Banksy. On the other hand I like what Zedsy does I give Zedsy a chance Also at Goin,Mode 2, Today I saw by hazard the documentary of the conflict between Banksy and Team Robbo (Rip)

Damien Hirst, good example! Of course very well known, maybe also not on trend, but remains exclusive compared to Banksy?

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by artnotcars on Jan 5, 2022 0:23:05 GMT 1, I thought he was clever at first - around the time of the Met and Museum of Natural History pranks, to DismalLand etc - heโs a copywriter/social commentator par excellence. But I find the unrelenting irony just a tad fatiguing in these times. A bit more optimism and emotion would be nice. I was never a JR fan, but watching a recent doco of his work at the Mexican border and in prisons elicited emotion and even tears. Iโm the last of the sentimentalists (you can tell from the way I phrased that last last sentence), but we need respite from all theโฆ irony. So Iโm personally not interested in paying 6 months salary for an edition of 500 of anything he churns out, or joining the mad scramble for his multiples being flipped as fast as you can say โI canโt believe you morons actually buy this sh*t.โ ๐ Same goes for KAWS. Theyโre the new opiates for the art-buying masses. And thereโs nothing wrong with that. Pass me a Mars Bar.

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by timmyc on Jan 5, 2022 0:45:48 GMT 1, I think if he just stopped now, without fully revealing his identity to the world, he (she?) could become kind of a legend. If Banksy just keeps going the mystery, interest and appeal could easily fade. I was given a print years ago (Golf Sale unsigned) but not really that interested now. I did love seeing new ones just appear though. My girlfriend worked on Rivington Street right next to the rail arch late 90s through early noughties.

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by ronanmc on Jan 5, 2022 0:53:15 GMT 1, It has been said that only about 10 artists per generation will transcend that generation, and be remembered by future generations. Personal view only, but Banksy is definitely one who will.
I wouldn't feel the same way about Damien Hirst at all.

But I am sure he or she will secretly reinvent themselves and become a hit once again. Making hits seems to be their thing. Too bad we will never know.

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by New Wave Dave on Jan 5, 2022 1:06:43 GMT 1, If the question is Will Banksy be Unfashionable at Some Point, I would say yes, for some folks. I love Bansky's stuff and am happy to see anything new he puts out but it's more about context and the idea behind it than the art itself. I thought his fairly recent vacation tour around the UK was cool but I don't remember any of the actual art created. He's a victim of his own popularity. Everyone is copying the Banksy look. It's just too much. But he's a legend and always will be. When I first started getting into this art space about a year ago I was gunning for Bansky's Save or Delete for my wall. Quite frankly, I think I would rather put something a little less, popular, on my wall. Would be a more interesting talking point TBH.
But again, a legend through and through.

He continued to spread cheer and comedy in the hard times the world went through and is still going through...Making people stop And smile or laugh..This is a gift. His generosity is astronomical.Everyone should follow such a person. And for this I think he is a true hero.

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by rvleb on Jan 5, 2022 11:57:33 GMT 1, Sorry if i say stupid things here as I am new. Fashionable, trendy for sure as long as he contrinues being creative. His actions in NYC (31 interventions in October 2013 or his "sale" at Central Park of creations for whatever people were willing to pay) were so interesting!
Now the fact that anyone buys or owns is more about the commercialization of art. If you see the perception of REVS who thinks or thought I think that any money involved is treason means betrayal can make us hesitate. The recent sale of street art in auctions is of course puzzling.
I am less sure about Hirst belonging to the same group. Did he ever produce urban art or street art? I know less, but I see him more as a traditionnal, gallery artist (and nothing wrong with this).
Just food for thought...

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by mrbagel on Jan 5, 2022 14:58:40 GMT 1, Allo - long time no speak!
Banksy hasn't been fashionable for a long time; in fact, it's been fashionable to dislike Banksy's work for ages.
Fortunately, art is not fashion and Banksy will stand the test of time. His anonymity alongside his humanitarian work transcend the aesthetic, which has always been heavily criticised. #handsandfeet

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by Jules Leotard on Jan 5, 2022 15:56:40 GMT 1, I think "Banksy" is evolving into a style like Dadaism, Fauvism, etc. Enough people are working the style, most just fall short of encompassing all the characteristics. It existed before Banksy and will exist after, but his 'brand' put the permanent label on it. Further, while there is always more to it than meets the eye, it never comes off as high-brow, so it is more or less, art for the people. Witty, irreverent, sardonic, ironic, amusing, inclusive, etc...

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by robo on Jan 6, 2022 22:30:05 GMT 1, Iโd imagine Banksy would hate to be called โfashionableโ or โon trendโ now or 20 years ago when he was starting up (though he was certainly very fashionable then). Heโll certainly always be important, relevant, timely, interesting. You just have to look at the T-shirts worn by 3 of the Colston 4 to see that. I believe heโs already greater than those shallow labels. Is Picasso on trend?

Banksy, Always Fashionable? DISCUSS, by Dermoth on Jan 8, 2022 17:13:09 GMT 1, Iโm not sure about the suitability of the term โfashionableโ when we are talking about his work. Popular, famous and recognisable may be more suitable? However, there is no doubt that the last number of years have seen a surge in interest from people buying his work - whether that is for investment reasons or that people are purchasing a piece they have always desired - and the last six months have seen a decline in the overall valuations achieved, at least for prints. I think there may continue to be volatility in pricing - which could be a proxy for whether his works are fashionable. However, I believe his staying power is proven and barring some outrageous scandal associated with the artist (and given the causes supported for years, one would suspect that is highly unlikely), his place as a great modern artist is safe. FWIW, Iโm lucky enough to have some pieces and would always love to add more, but my wife doesnโt like the works at all. So they are not displayed as prominently as other pieces in the house. Which shows that individual tastes and preferences will always differ, when it comes to art. As it should!
