Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by met on Feb 10, 2022 20:41:15 GMT 1, One hopes the use of this photo of British actor Benedict Wong was simply due to his hand gesture โ flipping the bird being the intended reference to Ai Weiwei. Who was Benedict Wong playing as in this photo? Ah, of course.
Sincere and embarrassed apologies to you, MattWolf.
It must have been rare emotion that triggered my unfortunate knee-jerk response.

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by Wanchope on Feb 10, 2022 21:12:34 GMT 1, it sold for ยฃ1879, not a bad return on ยฃ500 in??? Did you miss the "best offer" part of the listing? nope Iโd didnโt miss it. They normally draw a line through the price if an offer was taken. This doesnโt so I assume they got the price. Iโve sold an Emin poster for near on a grand because they wanted it. Iโve sold others on eBay where Iโve even sent an offer out and they still pay the ticket price. So most of us wouldnโt but some people are stupid with money. A bit like a shrigley poster in auction getting 3k when they can still buy it for 40 euros. All good though as they are nice pieces either way.

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by Deleted on Feb 11, 2022 12:56:58 GMT 1, www.theartnewspaper.com/2022/02/10/ai-weiwei-sparks-outcry-by-posting-anti-vax-video-on-instagram
However, Ai tells The Art Newspaper it is a civil liberty issue. He says: "For or against the vaccine should be individuals' autonomous decision, made for themselves and according to their social interaction, so society does not have the right to make vaccine compulsory. I had vaccines myself but I can completely identify myself with those who do not want to get vaccinated. If individuals are forced to be vaccinated through social pressure and public opinion, it will be a very dangerous social tendency."
He continues: "Regardless of the type of society, individuals are entitled to accurate information and then they can voluntarily collaborate with the government or not. This decision should belong to individuals."

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by Ravnur 2020 on Feb 11, 2022 13:40:31 GMT 1, To me, the good thing about Ai Weiwei is that he does not seem to be afraid to speak out and I respect him and his art for that. In this case I disagree with him to a certain extent, but on many issues I don't. In most cases having the discussion is much more constructive than boycott and cancelling.

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by MattWolf on Feb 11, 2022 14:21:06 GMT 1, What does his stance on vaccination have to with his art? Quite a lot actually. If you think someone's speech/actions does not impact on how people perceive their art, then you have been living under a rock for the past few decades.
I find the quality of life is better under here..

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by Jules Leotard on Feb 16, 2022 19:44:58 GMT 1, Is anyone else getting a chuckle from the irony on the timing (and message it sends) of the two releases being so close together and in the ballpark of the same edition size (2 x 500 = 1,000 while 150 x 4 = 600). 'Treadmill' being a strong political commentary of the times and an aspect of human rights and freedoms that are important to the artist while 'Cats' were Ai and his son 'playing' at art. Cats sold out instantly, while you can still pre-order 'Treadmill' and it has been available to order for almost a month?
From the text of the 'Cats' page:
"Whatโs even more interesting is that if a selfie of mine would be seen by 100 people, a cat photo would be seen by 1000 people..."
For Ai to achieve the meteoric success of someone of the caliber of Damien Hirst or Banksy, clearly he needs to issue more drawings, paintings, and sketches of cats.
With that said, did anyone snag a copy of Cats (framed or unframed - no matter) and feeling buyers remorse...

I think Ai Weiwei has already reached meteoric success. Heโs one of the most famous/well known artists in the world.

I have to say I agree with this. Itโs laboured and student like in its lazy concept and poor ideas as the final pieces. I still like a lot of his work and look forward to seeing more in the future.

That said, without too much thought (price), I can buy Ai's work on the secondary "flipper's"market for a fraction of Hirst or Banksy's work.

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by Jules Leotard on Feb 16, 2022 22:24:50 GMT 1, PS - You're likely right. With how fast they evaporated I wouldn't have been surprised if it were 150 total with 75 of each colorway.

Ai Weiwei - Treadmill edition, by Dive Jedi on Feb 17, 2022 12:31:15 GMT 1, Treadmills is obviously the better and more thoughtful artwork. But people prefer cats to treadmills. I guess it's the old problem. Do you give people what they want or what *you* want to give them? I'm sure lots of artists struggle with that. If you struggle with that you are not an artist.

How about Urban Speculators Association. The โUrbanโ part seems to be outdated, for years now, an art version of gentrification. First came the graffiti artists working in the streets, then the galleries jumped on it as it gained recognition, followed by galleries having the new wave graffiti assigned wall spots to gain some cred, followed by artists with no cred glomming onto the scene to feed hungry galleries, followed by a deluge of artists following in the stylings of some of the original artists. Two of the most mentioned artists on this forum are Hirst and Nara. Hirst, and Jonas Wood, Harlan Miller, for example, are contemporary artists, not โUrbanโ. Nara a product of his countryโs infantilization of women. I think at this point the โUrbanโ is more about an attitude than the artist or their body of work, although the bad boy of art a stereotype at this point (the bad girl of art not as developed a stereotype, likely due to the roadblocks and lack of notice female artists have received).
