It is the question every art collector should be asking each and every time they view individual pieces or consider wider bodies of work.

The requisite follow-up question of course is, "Why exactly do I find this interesting?"

In other words, "What are the specific reasons why this art is any good, rather than 'Not good'?"



My own position would be that buyers who don't ask themselves questions like these whenever they look at art, or who are incapable of clearly articulating their replies, shouldn't yet be describing themselves as art collectors.

I suspect that, more likely than not, such buyers are still at the stage of being easily-led and susceptible to hype — allowing other people or groups of people to think for them, and being more prone to buying with their ears.
