Who is Banksy?, by sm3gz on Jul 30, 2023 0:04:35 GMT 1, I think itโs a little frowned upon now on the forum Banksy true identity chat.
But I would be amazed if 80% of the members didnโt know it.

Yep - It's like picking at a sore. You don't need to do it, but can't help it. I listened to all of the Podcast, and really enjoyed it, but it reinforced that I don't want him properly out-ed. I just love what he does. It would be like going back to that amazing holiday in Crete again. It will NEVER be as good as you remembered. Don't f-ing do it!

Who is Banksy?, by sm3gz on Jul 30, 2023 0:37:34 GMT 1, I get you but in a sense I think it would be more anti establishment if he did announce it on his terms.
would true collectors/fans love the art any less just by knowing who it is? I donโt think they would.
would the art and media โmoronsโ (in his words not mine) deflate the buzz if he said who he was? Im not intelligent enough to guess that answer.

Who is Banksy?, by Pete the Post on Aug 6, 2023 17:10:23 GMT 1, I wonder if he drifts back to 1998 and thinks, dam, that guy said once your undercover, unmasking is a big gamble. or something.
It certainly seems like the rumour mill thinks he is toying with the unmasking.
Id say he can afford to hit gamble at this point if he fancies a bit heavy duty attention! Not sure i would though.
Be cool if he turns out to be Dave from the green grocer, or someone painting seaside scenes on the coast somewhere.

Who is Banksy?, by Jules Leotard on Aug 6, 2023 18:06:16 GMT 1, I could go either way on this.
That said, I wouldn't be averse to his work being more affordable if his identity were public knowledge. I think history needs for him to take credit for his work. Also, as I like him and he is my adult version of an invisible friend, none of us are getting any younger. I do think that he should take a bow in a metered manner, so we might all doff our caps. His auto-biography is much more interesting to me than 1,000 biographies that might be written.
I think that photo is really all any of us need for the time being, but I would also expect Steve got permission to post it.

Who is Banksy?, by sm3gz on Aug 7, 2023 0:29:01 GMT 1, Heโll reveal himself, too many loose cannons in the know.
Iโve always thought heโll want to do it on his terms rather than a leak.
Either way I donโt think it honestly makes much difference, he shaked the game and deserves to take the praise.

Who is Banksy?, by zoomrider on Oct 3, 2023 10:37:41 GMT 1, Can you copy and paste the article so we don't have to click the shitty link? He's been called Britain's 'unlikeliest national treasure'. But now, it seems, graffiti artist Banksy, whose works, quite often featuring rats and apes, sell for millions, is about to be described in rather less flattering terms โ in the High Court.
I can disclose that Banksy โ the pseudonym of Bristol-born, 53-year-old, public school-educated Robin Gunningham โ is named as the first defendant in a legal action accusing him of defamation.
His co-defendant is the company Banksy established โ and playfully named Pest Control Ltd. Contrary to its title, the company sells his art, which is invariably produced, overnight and unseen, with the use of a stencil, and which now adorns the sides of houses and crumbling walls not only in Bristol and London, but everywhere from the West Bank to Detroit.
The man initiating the action is Andrew Gallagher, 56, an iconoclastic entrepreneur who started out in the music industry, putting on raves in the 1990s, before exploiting the commercial potential of graffiti.
'I didn't realize it at the time, but most of the photographs I took were by a new kid on the block who went by the name of Banksy,' he explained in an interview last year, adding that the cards and other merchandise he sells are 'affordable products for fans โ and there are millions of fans'.
He declines to discuss the impending High Court confrontation, while his lawyer, Aaron Wood of Brandsmiths, tells me that details are currently 'confidential and will remain so until Banksy or Pest Control file their acknowledgement of service. For this reason,' Wood adds, 'I'm not at liberty to say any more about the claim.'
Banksy and Pest Control remain silent. After successfully applying for an EU trademark in 2014, they saw that ruling overturned when Gallagher appealed in 2021.
The judges noted that Banksy, who had declared that 'copyright is for losers', had long expressed disdain for intellectual property rights, and added that it was difficult for him to insist on copyright while remaining anonymous.
Last year, though, Banksy won a separate action which confirmed his right to trademark his series of images showing chimps with sandwich boards around their necks.
But will Gallagher now make a monkey out of him in the High Court โ not least by forcing him to show his face in public?
Banksy's real identity has never been fully confirmed - and speculation continues to surround the mysterious artist.
However, in 2008 the Mail On Sunday came as close as anyone possibly can to suggesting his identity - using a photograph taken in Jamaica showing a man in a blue shirt and jeans.
The Mail journalists visited Bristol, said to be Banksy's home city, where a man claimed the identity of the man in the photograph was Robin Gunningham. Banksy has denied the photo is of him. Banksy has denied the photo is of him.

Who is Banksy?, by Happy Shopper on Oct 3, 2023 10:45:02 GMT 1, Interesting. I guess someone can take Pest Control Ltd to court, but I doubt they can really take "Bansky", or Robin Gunningham, unless someone can prove they're the same person.

I guess someone can take Pest Control Ltd to court, but I doubt they can really take "Bansky", or Robin Gunningham, unless someone can prove they're the same person. First of all, do you really think, the government and the high court doesn't know who Banksy is? Like everyone else, Banksy has to pay taxes and is registered on a name. So it's easily proven. And do you thank Gunningham will like taking all the flack on his own when there's other members in the collective ?

Who is Banksy?, by doughnut on Oct 3, 2023 18:04:02 GMT 1, I would imagine he changed his name to a very common name anyway. Likes Smith, Roberts, James , Jones or Brown etc. Even if the name was released it would be quite hard to pinpoint it to him. Itโs a real shame though. I reckon there have been a great deal of people who have discovered the identity but would never dream of โoutingโ him due to what great things he has done as B.
