Don't scientists have better things to do? My 5 year old nephew bought a letter home from school a couple of weeks ago to say his class will be studying the paintings of Banksy for this years art project, Painting for Peace. They've created a beautiful huge peace sign made from all of their hand prints, based on CND Soldiers. (similar to Marcus Harvey although 100% less dark and with more colour) He is now obsessed with Banksy and drawing peace signs everywhere. We're making a stencil at the weekend and will secretly be 'getting up' on the garden shed once it gets dark  so cute teaching activist vandalism in little school..... makes auntie mojo very proud
Kids of all ages love being naughty and making a mess.

A study conducted by scientists at London's Queen Mary University claims to have discovered the identity of Banksy by using geographic profiling, a technique used to catch serial criminals. The academic research identified the anonymous graffiti artist as Robin Gunningham.
Geographic profiling is a sophisticated statistical analysis technique used in criminology to locate repeat offenders. The scientists looked for a correlation between 140 artworks in London and Bristol attributed to Banksy, and 10 commonly touted names purported to be the elusive street artist.
โThe pseudonymous artist Banksy is one of the UK's most successful contemporary artists, but his identity remains a mystery. The model takes as input the locations of these artworks, and calculates the probability of โoffender' residence across the study area," the authors write in the paper.
According to the Independent, the analysis revealed a series of hotspots, narrowing down a number of areas for the researchers to investigate further. The hotspots included a pub, a playing field, a residential address in Bristol, and three addresses in London.
After cross-referencing the hotspots with publicly accessible information on the list of 10 potential Banksy "candidates," the researchers found that each of the hotspots were places lived in or frequented by Gunninghamโa name identified as Banksy by a 2008 newspaper investigation.
โI'd be surprised if it's not [Gunningham], even without our analysis, but it's interesting that the analysis offers additional support for it," Steve Le Comber, a biologist and co-author of the study, told the BBC.
โWhat I thought I would do is pull out the 10 most likely suspects, evaluate all of them and not name any. But it rapidly became apparent that there is only one serious suspect, and everyone knows who it is. If you Google Banksy and Gunningham you get something like 43,500 hits," he said.
But does the study hold weight? There have been several attempts to unmask the mysterious street artist. Individuals thought to be Banksy have been arrested outside London and in New York. Others identified him as a parking attendant, and some say Banksy is in fact female.
The authors maintain the artist's identity isn't really the point. They say the purpose of the study is to use the identification of Banksy as an example of how geographical profiling can help catch more serious criminals.
โThese results support previous suggestions that analysis of minor terrorism-related acts (e.g., graffiti) could be used to help locate terrorist bases before more serious incidents occur, and provides a fascinating example of the application of the model to a complex, real-world problem," the report states.
But for fans (and haters) of the elusive street artist this could be a huge revelation indeed. Meanwhile, Banksy's own website was offline this morning, UK time.

I know a few people who knows Banksys identity, but the urban art scene has (imho) benefitted quite a lot from a few people active within street art who have maintained a high integrity and not running around squeeling about real names of alter egos. To me, it feels like som people find it an achievement to rip the integrity of an artist who has chosen a lifestyle and expression in art by and with secrecy, and i am not a bit surprised it is not someone from the scene providing this headline. I know its impossible, but for 'us' it would be desirable to keep our mouths shut and let the artists live the lives they have chosen.

I have just read the journal article. It comes across as rather gimmicky, and the foundation of the results it arrives at seems a bit weak. For example, the authors " expect 95 percent of artworks to lie within approximately two kilometers of a source (e.g., a home)". In other words, the assumption is made that Banksy would typically not travel further than 2 kilometers from his home to put up an artwork. The authors base this on a specific analytical component - a sigma value - which is " a typical value for โcriminalโ movement in urban environments". The use of this particular sigma value should mean that the authors - for analytical, not necessarily moral, purposes - designate Banksy's activities as "criminal". However, at the end of the article they write: " While some see Banksyโs street art as illegal graffiti, there is often an element of political protest in his subversive epigrams. His spatial patterns are therefore similar to those of others who post political messages in public places." The statement that the spatial patterns are similar to that of others who post political messages in public places could potentially mean that the sigma value used to determine the expected distance from an artwork to a "source" would be affected, unless the sigma value for "criminal activity" and "political protest activity" happens to be exactly the same. This issue is not addressed in the article. This is just one problem with the article, and potentially the study, that jumped out at me when I first read it. Another is the very last paragraph of the article, which reads: " Ethical note: the authors are aware of, and respectful of, the privacy of Mr. Gunningham and his relatives and have thus only used data in the public domain. We have deliberately omitted precise addresses." This comes across as disingenuous and/or uninformed. I would suggest that, from an ethical point of view, the authors should have stuck to their original idea and kept the "suspect" anonymous. I would further suggest that they chose not to do this because they were aware of the media attention their work could potentially attract if they included the name.
Pretty questionable study from what you've said. The media (and media hungry pseudo-scientists) always seem to forget that correlation doesn't imply causation. Based on your summary, not only have they not demonstrated that their findings were beyond coincidence, they actually seem to have made assumptions to give them the results they were seeking.
As a millionaire artist, you would think the "criminal activity" sigma value and/or "political protest activity" sigma value might not be applicable to Banksy due to the resources and time at his disposal. I imagine most political protesters and criminals tag locally because they have school in the morning lol

Well I don't know ( there was no subtitles ) , the dvd box is lovely, its very well filmed, we see men in the pubs talking or drinking, Its about Banksy you know....
ps : and they talk about banksy and we see a lot of artworks. Very sympathic movie !
