Kaws Tokion poster advice, by New Wave Dave on Feb 4, 2022 22:04:36 GMT 1, Hoping to grab a Kaws Tokion poster. Anyone have any advice on how to get one that's not a bootleg, love to hear it! Also, anyone know the numbers these were produced in? Googled a bit on these and that never came up.
Thanks! David

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by kwatis on Feb 4, 2022 22:46:12 GMT 1, Thereโs also me previous discussions on here, youโll just have to do a search using the keyword tokion.
Best bet would be to buy a complete set and preferably a set with the original black folder that they came in.
They are faked a lot so look thru a loupe is helpful in spotting fakes.
Good luck

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by u%hdjfka c on Feb 4, 2022 23:09:10 GMT 1, Most fakes look like the one on the left. These are very common at auctions. Easiest way to spot a fake is the close cropping of the signature without a gap to the white border. The gold is poorly reproduced and the the figure will have a purplish hue to it instead of pure black & white.

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by sleazus1slord on Feb 5, 2022 15:31:57 GMT 1, The market has been flooded with copies for years, I'd put your chances of pulling a real one around half a percent unless it's in the original set.

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by kwatis on Feb 5, 2022 15:43:54 GMT 1, New Wave Dave I did end up getting one, but thru some trial and error. Did a trade with a collector friend who had one but wasn't sure if it was authentic. Then I bought one from eBay that offered returns/refunds. Compared the two and found that the eBay one was fake and the one from the collector real. Asked and received a refund from the eBay seller. A couple months later I found a set of the Tokion posters and bought it. Again compared the KAWS poster from the set to my single one and they were identical.

Hat tip to kwatis, u%hdjfka c and sleazus1slord for their efforts here.
Clear, straightforward and helpful guidance โ especially the side-by-side image.
__________
These posts admirably cover the first of two key areas where the forum has greatest potential:
1. Informing other collectors so they are less likely to be defrauded or taken advantage of.
2. Encouraging other collectors (including on For Sale threads) to consider more carefully what they're looking to buy and precisely for what reasons โ so they are less likely to be influenced by marketing or hype, and more prone to thinking for themselves, as opposed to instinctively following either the herd or what they've been duped into believing is the herd.
__________
At some point during the next week or so, I propose to piggyback by offering additional details about the KAWS Tokion poster.
Some commentary is also warranted about art professionals who accept copies of the poster on consignment without carrying out the requisite due diligence โ while at the same time being fully aware of the pervasiveness of counterfeits on the market. In other words, being fully aware of the reasons why alarm bells should be ringing, and why extra caution is always required, each and every time they are presented with one of these posters.
But it is the first steps of any process that are most difficult. And in this instance, those steps were kindly taken by the above forum members.

Also look at the color/tone difference in the KAWS signature. Fakes tend to look more goldenrod and more of a vibrant hue. Real ones have more of an olive, drab/dull hue.

On a desktop, an insert image option is available that isnโt available on the mobile site

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by New Wave Dave on Feb 5, 2022 19:11:38 GMT 1, Thanks for this all. Looking online it seems even some of the auction houses/galleries are offering most likely fake versions. All of the ones on ebay I've seen look to be avoided (which tends to be the case with almost anything on eBay when it comes to name artists).

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by New Wave Dave on Feb 21, 2022 15:57:33 GMT 1, Thanks for sharing these! Now that I know the difference, suddenly the pool of available ones for sale shrinks to practically nothing. Think I've seen one in the wild for sale that looks legit so far. Def not a set though.

Kaws Tokion poster advice, by u%hdjfka c on Oct 15, 2024 11:07:14 GMT 1, I dug these out yesterday, may be useful for reference, tried to get a decent colour representation. Like itโs been said before, Iโd never buy the single Kaws poster on its own, and Iโd be very suspicious of anything thatโs mintโฆ what's the going rate for the set of 4?
