Art as an investment , by Display_arts on May 30, 2023 19:02:19 GMT 1, Oh dear yes some people buy...this year more than 10 pieces...
- 2 André Butzer (1 still availeble on Schaefer Grafik) - 3 David Shrigleys - 3 AiWeiWei - 3 open Editions of Avant Arte
and some others...
It´s an absolute buyers market - like always if you are a collector.
I think the question that startet this thread is going from a flipper to other flippers.
The rest of us will buy if we see something that we like.

Art as an investment , by ceriseris on May 31, 2023 8:22:05 GMT 1, I have a list of available prints that I want and tend to buy one or two a month. I fund this by selling anything that didn't make the wall.
I got at least 50+ prints I bought over the last 15yrs just sitting in a flat file. I assume this is the case for alot of people on here.
This month I purchased Cinta Vidal and Liqen, my outgoing was a Vhils

I guess that's a consequence of company's jacking up their primary prices to flipper rates, and resellers thinking there's an actual secondary market for those overly expensive prints.

Art as an investment , by Wearology on Jun 11, 2023 13:33:40 GMT 1, If you look at the banner on top of this page and see the names of the 17 urban artists that are supposedly the most famous and topical to the Urban Art scene 2006 - 2023, than one could have a better understanding of the rapidly changing urban landscape. Does anyone else besides me think it is time to update this list and make it more relevant to the current urban art movement ? And if you do, who do you think your top 5 should be added and omitted ? Please list them alphabetically, so we don't go off on another topic - like rankings.
I will go first:
Add: Kobra Noir Os Gemeos Pejac STIK
Omit: Bugs Dolk Eine Parra Peterson
Banksy (Active) Buggs (Active) DFace (Active) Dolk (Active) Eine (Active) Faile (Active) Fairey (Active) Hirst (Active) Invader (Active) Kaws (Active) Miller (Active) Parra (Active) Peterson (Active) Whatson (Active) Basquiat (Deceased) Haring (Deceased) Warhol (Deceased)

I always just assumed the names on the top were in some way tied to the holdings of our creator, Silk.
Anyhow, I wonder how this discussion relates to whether anyone is still buying art.

Dumb question maybe, but does that ranking based on verified sales data not directly reflect what people are buying?
That ranking was simply an attempt to move that particular part of the discussion back towards an empirical market based approach and away from a more abstract discussion around which artists people like or don't like and which artists people believe are simply worthy of promotion or relegation from the masthead on merit alone. Apologies if you believe that was out of turn.

Dumb question maybe, but does that ranking based on verified sales data not directly reflect what people are buying? Yes your response does discuss what some people are buying. I was speaking more to Wearology's post which threw the discussion off on a separate unrelated tangent. The initial aim of this thread was to see if forum members were still buying art or all trying to liquidate.
I always just assumed the names on the top were in some way tied to the holdings of our creator, Silk.
Anyhow, I wonder how this discussion relates to whether anyone is still buying art.
Dumb question maybe, but does that ranking based on verified sales data not directly reflect what people are buying? Yes your response does discuss what some people are buying. That's very kind of you. No worries. Organic discussions tend to meander naturally.

Yes your response does discuss what some people are buying. I was speaking more to Wearology's post which threw the discussion off on a separate unrelated tangent. The initial aim of this thread was to see if forum members were still buying art or all trying to liquidate. The data used to create that ranking reflects the global auction market and simply the aggregated values of art that is being 'bought' at auction in 2023.
In your original post when you asked "is anyone still buying art these days?" I interpreted this widely to include all collectors acquiring works from auctions globally and did not restrict it to the subset of forum members only. This is what has led to the slight confusion.

Art as an investment , by Dive Jedi on Jun 14, 2023 20:27:51 GMT 1, I've been buying a LOT less.
Brexit made buying much more expensive, import tax sucks and shipping increased a lot too. So that's not much fun anymore.
Markets are down, so selling isn't much fun either. So basicly laying low a bit and only sell once in a while.

Art as an investment , by Lord Elrond on Jun 14, 2023 20:33:17 GMT 1, While compiling the aggregate global auction sales data for each of the listed artists earlier I did notice that, subject to a couple of exceptions and factoring in the fact that we are as yet are only half way through 2023, the overall sales volumes are lower than in 2021 and 2022. This is of course a rather obvious conclusion but seeing it in the raw data while compiling a list was illuminating.
At this time I am personally cautious but I also believe that there are now many good and unique opportunities out there.

Art as an investment , by Lord Elrond on Jul 1, 2023 15:53:56 GMT 1, If you look at the banner on top of this page and see the names of the 17 urban artists that are supposedly the most famous and topical to the Urban Art scene 2006 - 2023, than one could have a better understanding of the rapidly changing urban landscape. Does anyone else besides me think it is time to update this list and make it more relevant to the current urban art movement ? And if you do, who do you think your top 5 should be added and omitted ? Please list them alphabetically, so we don't go off on another topic - like rankings. I will go first: Add: Kobra Noir Os Gemeos Pejac STIK Omit: Bugs Dolk Eine Parra Peterson Banksy (Active) Buggs (Active) DFace (Active) Dolk (Active) Eine (Active) Faile (Active) Fairey (Active) Hirst (Active) Invader (Active) Kaws (Active) Miller (Active) Parra (Active) Peterson (Active) Whatson (Active) Basquiat (Deceased) Haring (Deceased) Warhol (Deceased) This forum is focussed mainly on the market for artworks and most discussions are around the value of artworks. A better way to categorise this list of artists and the relative importance of each one could be to instead rank the artists according to the size of their public auction markets using publicly available auction data. The adjusted ranking below is based on the aggregate hammer price of all sold lots of each artist in global auctions at the time of writing so far in 2023. £87.2m Jean-Michel Basquiat £43.1m Andy Warhol £14.5m Banksy £8.6m Damien Hirst £8.5m Keith Haring £3.6m KAWS £802k Thierry Noir £672k STIK £434k Shepard Fairey £384k Invader £377k Harland Miller £74k Pejac £25k Cleon Peterson £16k Martin Watson £14k Dolk £11k D*Face £10k Kobra £5k Ben Eine £4k Faile £1k Parra £1k Miss Bugs £0 Os Gemeos* *This large painting (est. £150,000 - 200,000) at auction with Phillips in London in just over two weeks will get the twins comfortably off the mark in 2023! Link: www.phillips.com/detail/os-gemeos/UK010423/100 I kept my eye on the Os Gemeos painting that I referenced above. The painting was passed at Phillips yesterday. Os Gemeos remain on £0 in 2023.

When Banksy came to NYC in 2013 and wanted to collaborate on large scale original outdoor paintings and the cover of the Village Voice Newspaper with the top urban artists in the world - he chose Os Gemeos for their standing in the urban art movement - not how their secondary market prices have fluctuated through the years - which by the way have reached over $300,000 in 2016 and they are represented by one of the top galleries Lehmann Maupin plus their murals throughout the world are absolutely stunning !
