Do galleries budge on price?, by New Wave Dave on Feb 17, 2022 15:14:55 GMT 1, Hi all. I'm interested in an art piece on sales by a gallery that seems a bit overpriced. It's also not a 'hot' piece and has been sitting on the site for awhile. Do galleries budge on their prices? What is the best tact for approaching a gallery to consider offering a price drop? And lastly, what is the likely discount they would accept? In this case I think the item is over-priced by 20%. Is that too large of a discount request. Thaks in advance!

Do galleries budge on price?, by Make Paint Work on Feb 17, 2022 15:21:53 GMT 1, In my limited experience admittedly, there’s always room for shift in prices with galleries. 20% is a lot but I’ve bought from galleries and negotiated 10-15% almost everytime. Give them some evidence where else you could get it and they might see sense. Also, so long as you’re not desperate and can wait, you can leave your offer out there and chase it a month later - being loose like this always helps any negotiation.
Good luck!

Do galleries budge on price?, by Prive on Feb 17, 2022 18:22:34 GMT 1, I made an offer to a gallery recently for an item that had been sitting on their site for a while. They came back and said there was so much interest in the item the price was higher than what was listed on the website (which has a Buy It Now option). 2 months later, the item is still up on the site

Sometime easier to get them to throw in shipping or framing, instead of pushing for a large discount.

A great response when negotiating is "the price in my head was a little lower, what do you think about x", where x is 20% less. They almost always come back 10% off and/or free shipping and/or "we will pay your taxes" or something. Those are definitely worth a lot and then can save face and keep the sold price high.

if you stoop to terse - it's over.

Do galleries budge on price?, by Stopwatch Gallery on Feb 17, 2022 19:31:51 GMT 1, Yes. Well, we do.
However, our commission rate is quite small when compared to other galleries at 25%, and out of this we have costs to cover for marketing, web development etc…
Also, from this we plant a tree for every £10 / $14* commission we earn (from non-charity-based sales) via our partners at One Tree Planted. We’ve planted over 500 so far!
NB we don’t take commission from any works that are for charity and for some pieces we have to consult the artist re reducing the price of the piece.
Hope this helps!
Best,

Do galleries budge on price?, by John The Badgers on Feb 17, 2022 20:01:47 GMT 1, I would certainly be trying to buy at a reduced price newwavedave.
I think dotdot spot on, certainly the way you go about it vital?
I would also be looking at evidence to your thinking that its a bit overpriced, say auction results, sales else where, presenting that to them in the right way, and see what they say?
All the best with sorting.

Do galleries budge on price?, by ecudat on Feb 18, 2022 10:38:07 GMT 1, Some really good replies so not much to add here. I think if you're talking an unsold original piece from a show, then would definitely agree from a couple experiences I've had that 10-20% is a good ballpark to expect. They will usually throw in shipping without even really being asked, so while it has value, it doesn't have huge value as an extra bargaining chip IMO.
I think the story is different if they have a secondary market item. I suspect most would budge a little, but more like 5-10%. Particularly if it's an artist or piece in high demand and they are looking to extract market rises in their pricing.
Finally for show originals, I suspect for artists in high demand you'll have to pay the list price. And be quick to reply to catalogue emails (as I recently found!)

Do galleries budge on price?, by Deleted on Feb 18, 2022 10:46:30 GMT 1, It’s very much about the artist and demand , but I always ask for a discount and if that’s not an option, try to get free delivery.
That can save £1000s
People are scared of galleries and forget they are a business based on sales. You are as valuable to them… the galleries that can’t see that can work with someone else.
The eco system needs artists and galleries, but more importantly COLLECTORS

Do galleries budge on price?, by sean1397 on Feb 19, 2022 3:42:31 GMT 1, All galleries negotiate. Some even just price high and will sell 50-60% off. Basically unless something is super hot, galleries will sell at the market price regardless of their ask
Where they dont negotiate is primary sales but those are usually priced below resale

Do galleries budge on price?, by sandinista on Feb 19, 2022 13:17:13 GMT 1, Depends on gallery and the artist. Newer artists will get about 50% of gallery price so there will be more room for manouvre. I assume the more in demand the art the lower the commission for the gallery.

I assume the more in demand the art the lower the commission for the gallery. They usually have a contract that gives them the right to sell for up to 15% discount without the artists consent. This usually comes from the Galleries 50% commission so the artist still get their 50%. Regular clients rarely pay full whack. You can generally get 10% off anything that's hanging on the wall.

Do galleries budge on price?, by Charlie Bronson on Feb 19, 2022 20:54:21 GMT 1, Absolutely they do. It all depends on the artist and artwork. If it’s an in demand artist, and the work you’re asking for a discount on is in a new/current show, likely not. If the artwork has been sitting at the gallery for a while, likely so.
A little tip for you. With the invention of social media, contacting artists directly is easy. It’s a great way to access purchasing their work directly from them, and in doing so getting a discount off of gallery prices, using discretion of course.
It’s a questionable tactic, and I may get heat for saying this, but I’m not passionate about and involved in art to make galleries money. In fact I’d argue that by omitting the gallery fees and dollar sales percentage usually incurred by the artist when a piece sells at a gallery, the artist gets more money by selling directly to you and I. I’d rather give the money directly to the artist. Some artists are open to this, some aren’t.

Do galleries budge on price?, by Hey Brooklyn on Feb 21, 2022 3:00:45 GMT 1, Agree with social media as a great way to build a relationship with an artist which may get you access to some hot work that the gallery would rather give to their VIP / repeat customers. Yes, even some artists that are between galleries may even sell to you direct.
But I don’t agree the system would be better without galleries. They protect the artists career with a “long game” mentality. Those VIPs are the $$$ types that’ll donate to museums, institutions or put in their private museums. Not flipping on UAA a year later. Galleries deal with the finances, marketing and the insane amount of money it takes to bring the work to the collectors. Artists need to create not deal with someone wanting 60% off and wanting to make 3 installments over 4 months kind of shit.
Absolutely ask for 10-15%. Even 20 if it’s been sitting around for a while. BUT the best advice I can give you is just be cool. Be professional and polite. Introduce yourself. Tell the gallerist about your collection. What you love about the work / artist. What you love about their program and their other artists. Do the work. The doors open when you do. Find a good gallery you click with and has a roster you like but more importantly has group shows with big time non-roster artist. Then you’ve got it made. This biz is about relationship building. I love it.
