Stapled canvas stretcher... reframe or leave alone?, by daws0n on Feb 24, 2022 22:31:32 GMT 1, Hey all
Unsure what to do about this painting.... Is it OK long term for canvas stretchers to be staple onto an outer frame like this?
Looking online I don't think the original framer has used the proper tools to fix the canvas / stretcher to the outer frame. I'm currently in talks with a pro framer who has suggested reframing with a new border / proper depth so nothing is pinned down like it is now.
From the front all looks fine and it seems like it may be difficult to get those metal pieces out.... There are 12 altogether (3 on each side).
What do you guys think? Leave alone or fix up?

I don't think that's normal. You can use these offset canvas clips instead.

Stapled canvas stretcher... reframe or leave alone?, by daws0n on Feb 25, 2022 2:30:28 GMT 1, Yes they're small metal points that I usually see holding on hardboard backing.

Stapled canvas stretcher... reframe or leave alone?, by We Have Your Prints on Feb 25, 2022 11:32:46 GMT 1, Framers points are easy to get out, just grip with small pliers and wiggle them gently from side to side and they will slide out

Stapled canvas stretcher... reframe or leave alone?, by daws0n on Feb 25, 2022 12:05:42 GMT 1, Cheers for comments everyone. ยฃ40 to get it done with a properly with correct sized framer. Painting was a few hundred quid so no point skimping on half a job...
I'll post a photo when it's done!
