The wole regulation thing is about people from belgium, france and germany who travel to the netherlands just to get some weed, cause a lot of trouble and then leave. Amsterdam is strongly opposed to is legaslation as far as I know, As you might expect, the illegal selling of marihuana on the street is know very popular in maastricht and other suthern cities... I expect these laws to be cancalld within two years. Work in Amsterdam regularly, but never get time to hit the Gallery's... Will be interested to Read Sal's post later... The Foreigner ban on bud hasn't been implemented with the exception of Maastirct. and i doubt it will be in Amsterdam... Disagree that if it does come it will be because of the British!! Its coming in because of drug tourism! That doesn't just apply to the British! Sure we can handle our Bud on British Shores! Some of the best strains in Dam originate from the UK!!

I actually took a street art tour, which I would recommend if you wanna see the street stuff.. otherwise, it's hard finding all of it, especially when visiting for few days.. check em out HERE..
as for galleries/shops, I'd recommend you to check out the following:
- OutlandRecords store, near Centraal station/Red Light District, for the latest vinyl toys.. also, Jerome, the owner, is always open for a chat about his impressive collection that is displayed in the shop..
- Battalion/Andeken shop/gallery is quite nearby Leidseplein square, and have great selection of prints and originals (Eine, Obey, Parra, Faile, etc), as well as cool art/design items.. Hyland, the owner, is a super cool guy, knows his art, and has a big collection himself, so feel free to ask him about whatever you're interested in.. they have double show by Vilz Feel Free openning mid July, so maybe you can check that out..
- Go Gallery is on Prinsengracht, in the middle of the nicest area of the city, Jordaan.. just in front of the gallery is massive TLP mural, and around the corner are plenty of 2nd hand shops, little cafes, galleries, and such.. oh and the Grey Area cofffeeshop is nearby!
- Jaski gallery is in the middle of Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, a street full of galleries and art related shops.. definitely worth a visit (check out the works by Chris Berens when there), and quite "on the way" when visiting Van Gogh museum or Rijksmuseum (which is renewed and reopened by now I believe)
- Reflex gallery & Famous auction house are at the lower end of Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, and are good place to check out some Murakami prints and lots of other cool art.. also, they are hosting a new show by Dadara at the moment, which is a MUST SEE I think..
other than that, I'd strongly recommend you to have a beer @ Cafe Belgique (quite near Dam Square), and check out the street art around and inside this legendary place.. if you cant get enough Belgian beer, make sure you check out De Zotte as well (quite near Leidseplein)..
as for seeing street art in the wild (without taking the tour), Spuistraat, Bilderdijkkaade, and little streets in Red Light District are worth checking out, but I'd still suggest you to save yourself some time, and take someone who knows the place to show you around..

My wife has just informed me that she's booked a late August trip for us and besides the Unruly Gallery www.unrulygallery.com/ ... I was looking for a few new places to add to my visit.
My last trip there was way back in 1995 and is a bit of a distant memory, the Rolling Stones played a free concert which was shown live via huge screens in the city, but beyond that a lot of my memories are vague at best. So your sage wisdom is very welcome!
Don't get me wrong I met more artists and designers than most do in my week long trip, but beyond coming away thinking 'I must relocate' and being slightly dismayed at the sights in the 'ahem' more tourist focused areas, I fell a little in love with the place.
They really seemed to support the arts and had a lovely attitude towards life in general.
It'll be good to head back!
Any other tips are greatly appreciated.

as for bike rentals, I used BikeCity once (bikecity.nl), but you'll be able to find one nearby wherever you're staying at..
btw, I believe Amsterdam Street Art is organizing an event the first week of Sept, so you might wanna check it out if you're still around (http://www.amsterdamstreetart.com/)..

The city just rocks, and one of the highlights was the time we spend visiting the Battalion/Andenken Gallery. Hyland was indeed a true gent; very accommodating, informative and just a pleasure to hang with. Ended up buying a great Amanda Marie OG. Definitely worth a visit!!
