New Artist: JiHyun Kim originals , by MLSOVT on Jul 19, 2022 14:40:33 GMT 1, I commissioned a young up & coming artist from Korea named JiHyun Kim to create a portrait of my dog Jake who is 13 years old eating Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. The gallery based in Singapore mrlimsshopofvisualtreasures and the artist were an absolute pleasure to deal with - and most importantly I love the painting. I hope Jake who is a wolf mix and his portrait make you smile as well : )   
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. And thank you for the kind words. They mean so much to us.
We are a little team of young artists and a middle age semi retired gallerist. We are trying our best to carve a little viable ecosystem in Singapore; for us to create the work we believe in.
Our grades are bad. We don’t write good proposals to get government grants.
We find it very hard to conform and compromise. So this middle age dude sells his art collection to help fund this fledging ecosystem.
The art we create is against the grain. Not something that galleries here would support. Who wants a brick with a dog partially painted on it? Who wants a painting of a blur blob that is a cutout of a traffic mirror?
The same goes with Atin Yeo - his powerful and flamboyant style is not something this still stiflingly conservative market can stomach.
Most, if you don’t play the decorative game, give up in 2-3 years. It’s just too hard. The expensive city. The demanding social pressure. The lack of genuine, unrestrictive, government support.
These are just opinions. Based on what I, the above mentioned gallerist dude, learnt from my many, many chats with artists here.
During the painting of this commission. JiHyun Kim was extremely worried about experimenting.
Surrounding Jake with ice cream. Even dipping his ears with ice cream. But we went ahead as we feel the collector would be supportive.
And he is. So so so supportive!
We have learnt so much from this. And for that we are deeply grateful.

Thank you! We are very excited and encouraged by all the positive vibes!! We paint what we like. We are deeply influenced by street art. Though Singapore isn’t the most graffiti friendly place! Irreverent outsider odd as heck. Not quite Singapore. Which we feel, might be a good thing!
Oh yes - JiHyun just visited the Shepard Fairey museum show in Seoul. “so cool!” Was her review.
