Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by Stonetown on Feb 5, 2024 2:22:09 GMT 1, Yep, my small one looking pretty terrible at the framers. I have spent the last few nights worrying about what to do if works in this series sell on the secondary market for or below cost. People who come round and see it on my wall will surely think: "that guy has a painting worth only ยฃ20k which he must have paid ยฃ23k upwards for". It's unthinkable. It's made worse knowing that my children wouldn't forgive me if they ever had to inherit an original painting which they discovered, in the first few years I owned it, couldn't achieve the same resale multiple as a Kaws vinyl figure might have done in the late 2010s. Must buy better next time.

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by slartibartfast on Feb 5, 2024 2:36:07 GMT 1, I'm so sorry you had to go through the pain of buying it..I'll give you 2K for it now im adraid i dont have a Kaws vinyl to swap you though.. It'll go well with mine!! Now just need a third for a dyptich. I like the Brown or any natural wood maybe with a bit of air gap between the canvas edge strip and the frame, definitely adds to the organic feel. Maybe a Cherry wood frame also could be a good consideration.

Furthermore whom gives a fuXk what your kids think down the line? I think the one you purchased is beautiful and is a true stunner. The art market is very fickle and who knows what will happen in the future. I my wife and her husband all applied. Not one of us were offered the chance to buy so consider yourself, family, friends very lucky.

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by Georgie Poppit on Feb 5, 2024 13:10:58 GMT 1, Did the framers advise that frame? I would have personally left a breathing space and gone for a tray frame, probably with around a 5mm front

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by Horatio Nelson on Feb 5, 2024 14:09:44 GMT 1, Did the framers advise that frame? I would have personally left a breathing space and gone for a tray frame, probably with around a 5mm front The brown was my idea - I wanted something to complement the wood/tree imagery. And I've got too many white box frames, so wanted to mix it up a bit. I think it will end up being somewhere between the brown and v dark brown colours shown - if it's too light/orangy it distracts from the colours in the painting.
Definitely going for a 5mm gap (I was putting the samples a bit too close to the artwork).

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by pippa on Mar 15, 2024 13:26:08 GMT 1, I was sent this - they didn't even show me the painting I was allocated.
I emailed back to ask what picture I had been allocated. They emailed back:
Like others have said, it feels like the paintings are being knocked back several times then offered out to the remainder of the list. However, it feels very sloppy to not even bother to show which painting in the original email. Maybe they only decided which one to send after I asked.
For context, I own no art worth much. I think my most expensive piece is a $700 print. In my application I told them this would be my first original artwork.
After reading this thread I'm thinking maybe this shouldn't be my first ever piece? Advice welcome!

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by its all about me on Mar 15, 2024 13:58:16 GMT 1, I certainly wouldn't pay 25K for that.
I share your concerns about Heni, by the way. It also bugs me that you must pay in US dollars despite the fact that they are based in London. My least favourite art producer, by far.

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by LJCal on Mar 15, 2024 15:58:11 GMT 1, Personally in your position I wouldnโt buy it. Itโs alot of money to throw into one piece if you donโt have a big collection. There are far better ways to spend to $25k and safer bets at auction right, a lot of primary releases at the moment havenโt adjusted their pricing to reflect the state of the market. As there are 900 of them, there is a good chance secondary prices could end up below cost in the near term, the fact that itโs over 4 months since they closed applications and theyโre still offering them out doesnโt auger well.

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by blurp on Mar 15, 2024 16:17:17 GMT 1, And scarcity certainly isn't a thing..... I'm honestly in awe at the appetite for Hirst work and the man just keeps on making it. Buying into Hirst seems a bit like a pyramid scheme atm.

It's a shame that galleries have to go by the rule, never lower your primary prices even if you're about to go out of business.

Yeah bit of a bloodbath, the days of buying emerging artists and selling their works before the paint drys seems to have run its course. That end of the market has been hit really hard, as you say it's funny how loads of galleries are still pretending there are waiting lists for these artists when half a dozen paintings a quarter are going to auction and all being passed.

Damien Hirst - Cherry Blossom 2023, by LJCal on May 24, 2024 3:06:52 GMT 1, Yeah I hope everyone knows to take these results with a giant pinch of salt. There's 900 of these guys. Would anyone guess if Damien is the consignor and the buyer? I wouldn't like to speculate (but I will a little), personally I doubt it. However, there was no way with the drop not even fully allocated that this was going to pass, so entirely possible it was bought back into inventory to protect the sale of the rest (which is entirely legitimate if there's no collusion between the parties). I reckon someone just made a big turn, won't ever be able to buy Hirst again but pocketed close to ยฃ40-50k setting a high reserve and knowing it was likely to get supported - clever, even more so if they used a proxy. Of course there's always the possibility that someone with more money than sense liked it and paid well over the odds, when there are dozens available secondary at less than half the price. No comment as to what is the most likely scenario, but either way the result should be given limited weight right now.
My personal view is that if you bought a good one you'll do well medium/long term and if so minded could make a turn now, but these are not all created equally, some simply aren't as good quality as others. Notwithstanding the quality I wouldn't be rushing out to buy one of these at anywhere near the price this sold, if you're getting quoted more than ยฃ40k walk away and for some even ยฃ30k. For a good one ยฃ32-35k is the price until the market settles and 900 of these get absorbed into serious collections.
