The recently completed woodcut print “Equilibrium” is a work in which a dancer, Whatson's representative motif, is expressed mainly in stencils, with graffiti such as tagging added on top of it. In addition, Whatson added his own hand-drawn parts to the work after it was printed, resulting in a new woodcut print work with a unique individuality
Framed 215,000yen(Tax-exclusive)
Print 200,000yen(Tax-exclusive)
This edition will be sold to customers selected by drawing lots. If you wish to purchase the work, please enter the drawing during the following period.

New release Equilibrium by Martin Whatson (Lottery), by Icesay on Oct 5, 2022 19:48:59 GMT 1, Whatson hasn't honestly had someone incredibly skilled make woodcuts and then he has scrawled some of his crayon marks on top has he? Fookin insulting. Hours of work followed by seconds of flim flam!

New release Equilibrium by Martin Whatson (Lottery), by Acme Thunderer on Oct 5, 2022 20:21:53 GMT 1, Great to see Whatson experiment with different print techniques and materials. The reason for Japanese woodcuts is because of his recent exhibition in Tokyo. All works from that show (including 75 of this edition of 150) was only sold locally, so this is the only opportunity for international collectors.
I’ve been following this print for a couple of months so I’m hoping that the hoards of flippers don’t register to give collectors a chance. The cost after shipping and customs fees will be approx £1,500 so not much in it for flippers.
Anyone interested should also note that it is really small (30x45cm) so is only a bit bigger that the mini prints for GP.
…and this is one that I do want on the wall. 🙏

New release Equilibrium by Martin Whatson (Lottery), by yoss on Oct 6, 2022 21:26:15 GMT 1, I am actually hopeful for this lottery.
I refuse to try to get MW prints from Graffiti Prints. Graffiti Prints only selects their previous clientele for their "lotteries" and/or only releases like 10 prints. Then they keep 50 prints for sale at a later date for twice the price.
Fingers crossed with Adachi-Hanga!!!! (Plus, the style of print-making seems totally awesome!!)

New release Equilibrium by Martin Whatson (Lottery), by sleazus1slord on Oct 7, 2022 18:25:34 GMT 1, Seems quite strange to go to enormous lengths, and use considerable skill, not Whatson's I notice but a wood engravers (not that that matters), to replicate another form of printing technique, stencils. As a printmaker it feels unnatural, to me the beauty of printmaking is to use techniques to their best advantage and enjoy the character each technique brings to the prints. Not try and make one process look like another. But certainly very skilled wood cutting involved. Demonstrably poor take here. You concede the skill of the woodcutter but disparage the process as a 'replication' of a STENCIL lmao. The Musivaria mosaics are another 'replication' of stencils/acrylic, both the woodcutting and stone mosaic work serve to elevate the imagery. The choice of paper, image size, even custom framing are evidence of the the thought and care put into this project. If you can't appreciate that as a gallery yourself, I might suggest a new line of work or at least put some sugar in your salt shaker and lighten up.

Also replication whilst complimentary is not by definition the essence of invention. You can't elevate a stencil by changing the medium by which it is produced. If I create a drawing and then ask someone to replicate it using a different technique is doesn't become better. It's a copy of original intent. It is essentially polishing a turd. Be nice, we all have opinions.

New release Equilibrium by Martin Whatson (Lottery), by Daniel Silk on Oct 10, 2022 0:34:53 GMT 1, Amazing process used to create these new Martin Whatson prints. Do you like the look of the finished product? Do you value the print higher because of the way it was made or doesn't it make any difference?

…Unfortunately, neither was I one of the chosen few.

New release Equilibrium by Martin Whatson (Lottery), by jamo on Jan 4, 2023 11:05:34 GMT 1, Beautiful! Nice pick up. I visited Adachi when I was in Tokyo in November and was so impressed with the skills / craftsmanship used to produce these prints and their traditional methods. Nice people too! They were working on a few other ‘urban’ artists’ images for release early this year.

Yes the workmanship is very impressive and also the hand finishing by Whatson, I was in Tokyo 3 years ago but didn't know Adachi, a big pity I didn't visit it.
