Painting a Frame, by ak1 on Nov 21, 2022 16:02:24 GMT 1, Hi all. Bought a couple of pieces at auction recently and the frames could do with a lift.
Both pieces are not Urban/street but well established 'traditional artists'. If I paint the frames, would this take away from the history of them and, if not, what's the best type of paint? Thanks.

Painting a Frame, by churchwood on Nov 21, 2022 16:19:41 GMT 1, what sort of frames are they -ornate or plain? I have freshened up old ornate frames before - just with some decent spraypaint.
probably also depends on the age of the artwork and if the frames are original as it may be deterimental to mess with them too much and also whether you are able to safely take the artwork away from the frame for painting without buggering anything up

I'll probably leave them as is or eventually think about re-framing but keeping all the provenance labels etc with any new frames.

Painting a Frame, by John The Badgers on Nov 21, 2022 20:02:03 GMT 1, If it's any help ak1, I bought a framed piece circa 18 months ago, in a large white 'box frame' that had seen better days. Due to the size, re-framing would be quite expensive.
Due to the size, tricky to spray, instead brush painted.
I do a few painting jobs for people, so have a reasonable knowledge. I used plenty of decent water-based undercoat, sanding with a block between coats. I masked off the Perspex. Make sure you use a quality brush.
Topcoat I used an oil-based, white eggshell by Dulux Trade. This gives a very flat, smooth finish when fully dried.
Have to say, it turned out really well.
Hope this helps.
