If you get the chance go to Ihla Grande, stay at Asalem www.asalem.com.br/
Andre Cypriano runs it with his wife. Andre is an insane photographer man, he's the guy who was allowed into the devils caldron to take pics before it shut down (Brazils most infamous prison), hes also gone into Rocinha which is Brazils largest favela and photographed the peeps living there. Lovely guy. Well worth checking his work out by the by.

SoHo, Chelsea, Meat Packing, etc. for big, cool galleries.
PS-ONE in Queens is my TOP TIP.

The Maze is run by an eccentric 60+ Englishman, Bob Nadkarni, who set up home 30ish years ago in a favela.
It's a crazy place, but has probably the best view in Rio since there are no hotels up the mountains.
If you want interesting chat, great food, a bit of jazz, brilliant (and very cheap) caipirinhas, the lowdown on the city and, frankly, the best sunrise/sunset of your life, check it out.

The face was all tagged up, with "while the cats away, the rats will play" and such

If someone also have tips for Sao Paolo or have spent the night there id be happy to hear your opinions. Got a flight EARLY in the morning and pointless to get a hotel when ive got to leave at 12.30 in the night anyway!!
