This is their new space so Choque Cultural now have two art spaces in the city. Current shows include Gary Baseman and Shag. This year we expect to see more prints and more artists books being published as the gallery consolidates its position. For anyone visiting Sao Paulo it has to be on their itinerary...

Visit Sรฃo Paulo ๐ง๐ท Brazil Street Art, Galleries & Events, by Martin Whatson on Mar 25, 2010 3:00:47 GMT 1, Hey all. As some may know allready i've been making my way through southeast Asia, Los Angeles, peru and Argentina on my travel with varied cultural inputs and way more beer then my body needs for the upcoming bikini season back in Europe. But next on the list is brazil, and in some time New York and I'm wondering if some of you might have some ideas on exhibits, museums, sights, hotels and places to visit or things to do in both Rio, Sao Paulo and New York. I'll be in Brazil in the end of April and in New York in the first week of June!
All tips are appreciated! and if I get a real good one I might just send out some art stuff when I'm back home!
Peace and Love! MW

Visit Sรฃo Paulo ๐ง๐ท Brazil Street Art, Galleries & Events, by Blind Angle on Mar 25, 2010 13:19:28 GMT 1, Hi Martin
I have had the pleasure of living in Rio for a couple of years now so here are a couple of my favourites!
Museums:
Centro Cultural Banco de Brazil (Centro)
www.bb.com.br/portalbb/home21,128,128,0,1,1,1.bb
Usually high quality contemporary art (had Os Gemeos recently in Rio, but from 2nd March to 16 May they will be exhibiting in CCBB in Brasilia) Lovely old building!
Oi Futuro (Flamengo) www.oifuturo.org.br/site#/pt-br/cultura/oifuturo-flamengo)
Hi tec small cutural center with cutting edge mostly video art. Currently Eduardo Kac exhibiting.
Folkloric museum (Catete) + Old Presidential Palace and gardens
The well made folkloric museum houses a great little collection of art from all around Brazil. Some really good carneval costumes and candoble custumes are on display. Next to this is the building that was the presidential palace between 1894-1960. The builing houses a lot of interesting exhibits and the gardens where elderly ladies and gents gather in the afternoon to play music and sing sambas is very charming.
Instituto Moreira Sallas (Gavea)
ims.uol.com.br/
Fantastic little cultural center with exhibitions, music and cinema. Good photography exhibitions. Lush setting below the Rocinha favela and the Dois Irmaos mountain. Enjoying a good cup of coffe in the gardens designed by Burle Marx is wonderful!
Museo Arte Contemporeano (in Niteroi) is the famous flying saucer by Oscar Niemeier. The art on display is usually below par, but if you are interested in modern architecture it is a must!
Paco Imperial (Centro) on Praca XV has varied exhibitions, some beuatiful old churches like Candelaria nearby and the little restaurants in the narrow old streets of Centro are usually nice.
Restaurants and cafees:
Confeteria Columbo (Centro): Great breakfast in grand setting. Parque Lage (Jardim Botanico): Great cafe food in courtyard of old house right under Corcovado and Christo Redentor, some exhibitions usually on as well.
Aprazivel restaurant (Santa Teresa): Great Bahia inspired food with breattaking views over Rio Grumari restaurant (Grumari): Restaurant in the middle of nowhere with great moqueca (seafood stew) and an unbeatable sunset view along the coast. Garota de Urca (Urca): Good picanha in relaxed setting
For streetart and graffiti i have found that the areas around Jardim Botanico - Lagoa, Centro - along Avenida Brazil and the back streets of Botafogo have lots of good graffiti. But you can stumble upon good graffiti almost anywhere in Rio.
Other things:
Maracana
MAM (Museo de Arte Modern, www.mamrio.com.br/) coupled with a walk along the seafront of Flamengo park past Marina de Gloria looking over on Pao de Acucar.
Urca (under Pao de Acucar)
Igreja de Pena Sao Bento Monastry (Centro)
Ill return with some more tips later! Now back to work!
cheers
Ragnar
