Sandra Chevrier Graffiti Print new release, by kapusta on Jan 31, 2023 6:16:22 GMT 1, not arguing.... but in the LE art world a minute diff on a sellout is major indicator of the demand and hence why i would even both correcting him. sandra's works historically would sell out in a matter of seconds and not even get to 1 minute past the hour (let alone 2 min past). i think the price point and image hurt this release and why demand was significantly down. certainly kept me on the sidelines and i know others. Just look at her originals to see where the market is going ... 2 years ago, originals would sell in the pre-sale. Now, her Miami originals -- from both galleries which showed her work -- are sitting unsold on Artsy. That's what happens when you don't evolve. I trust her prints will follow unless there is a quick shift from money grab to trying to evolve (and as I mentioned before, not a change in background color or angle lol).

I donโt find the post โoddโ at all - this is an art forum for discussion - is it not? It occurred to me that this artist, in particular, seems to elicit this type of comment whenever a post is made about her, on a more regular basis than almost any other artist on the forumโฆ Whether the โevolutionaryโ comments have merit or not is not why I posed the question. What I am suggesting is that there does not seem to be anywhere near the same level of scrutiny, on such a regular basis, of other artists who, one could argue, are equally, if not more, unevolved, and, in your words, release โshi**y printsโ .

Martin Whatson used to get ripped to pieces on here for repeating the same thing over and over again. At least the main images change with his where as Chevrier uses womens faces ever timeโฆYes this is an art forum for discussion so expect opinions that differ from yours. I my self think youโre talking nonsense and trying to find something that isnt there. |

She paints comic books on women's faces. some of her older more popular stuff was women's full bodies. recently, she dabbled with some of that melting / stretch imagery (still of women's cartoon faces but). i think there are a number of ways she can try diff stuff but still sticking to women/comics (if she wants). she's certainly talented enough. |

Her other problem is that she is completely against anyone making money on the art other than her ... when her pieces go up for auction or resale, she flips out. Value going up is what makes people want more of her work ...

Agreed. How about women who aren't models? Children? Manga comics instead of DC or Marvel ... there are a million ways to evolve while staying in her lane. Her work thus far is a good capsule but it has been stretched too long. Time to wrap that one up and make new ones to keep interest high. At one point I counted them but it was much larger than previous. She simply filled her market and now there is little resale upside on anything newer. Nothing wrong with that but that's what happened. She raised price, increased volume and here we are with stuff sitting
Also some people, myself included do not like her drop methods. Ill leave it at that. A lot of people have been pushed away and that's ok. It's her art. She has every right to make it and sell it however she likes but when people don't like something they tend to stop spending money - at least that is what I've observed.
The most investible artists are the ones who thank their buyers and do not repeat work
Also I have noticed that most of the time (i'd say 80+%) when an artist who used to do all or a fairly large number of hand finished pieces moves to 100% non hf or almost all non hf pieces, it is usually time to step aside as these always sell for a bit and then collectors get tired of buying non hf work. If the non hf work replaces hf work at a higher price than the hf work was in the past, it's an even worse omen. Very very few artists have the market and demand to move from selling things made with their hands to selling prints they have only touched to sign. There are a few (Kaws, Invader, etc) but for every one of those who makes the transistion sucessfully far more see the valuations come in
