He has a broad subject matter - Iโm not sure you can easily say โclassic Doigโ, but Iโm far from an expert.
But I do like the look of these and to me seems cheap given signed, the size, and number of editions.

What you gain in value you lose in the inconvenience of having to look after a heifer.

Not my favourite Doig image Iโll admit, but youโre right, considering heโs a top tier blue chip artist who only releases a print every couple of years nowadays this was too good to pass on. Plus Iโm pretty sure this image will be the full sheet & no borders as with his last digital pigment print (Ten to One is Murder, 2018) which looks awesome if youโre thinking of floating it.
Heโs not a hype artist, so I suspect his collector base isnโt scouring blogs & forums looking for the next drop, hence the relatively low response rate.
Btw, on the subject of plates, hereโs a Doig one thatโs still available @ Whitechapel. Bit steeper than the Coalition for the Homeless ones tho:

Wool was the one to get ! Sadly not on this occasion thus far
The Doig and an Ed Ruscha edition for ยฃ1100 between them and both in the same week and I canโt complain !

Doig achieved multi million dollar auction prices by painting Rosedale, Boiler House, The Architect's House, Pine House and Swamped. Bather for Secession pales in comparison.

I read it as more concerned about investment, but Iโm probably cynical.
If you like Doigโs work I recommend Phaidonโs monograph. The paperback is an affordable and thoroughly enjoyable display of this great artistโs work.
This discussion it's actually quite didactic. While it focusing mainly on pricing but covers the "quality of the art" as well. I like the examples showed by Jimini Cricket more than the Bather. Is it shite though? Any examples of better prints for similar money available? Either way carry on guys, I will gladly learn more. I read it as more concerned about investment, but Iโm probably cynical. If you like Doigโs work I recommend Phaidonโs monograph. The paperback is an affordable and thoroughly enjoyable display of this great artistโs work. |
