Seeing in Phosphene by José Parlá, by Avant Arte on May 5, 2023 17:36:59 GMT 1, It’s been a while since our last collaboration with José Parlá so we’re super excited to announce our new time-limited print edition: Seeing in Phosphene. The edition is based on an original painting that was born out of Parlá’s ability to see phosphene. This sensory phenomena is a big source of inspiration for him. You might have experienced it yourself when rubbing your closed eyes or when staring directly into light. You start seeing strange shapes and colours. For Parla they help him enter almost a meditative state that summons memories that guide his creative process.
On May 17 at 15.00 CET the edition will become available for 24 hours with free worldwide shipping. Each print will be signed by the artist.

Seeing in Phosphene by José Parlá, by Zippy on May 5, 2023 18:13:18 GMT 1, What is the printing process on this one? I like the image and without a white border it could look good framed up. However, I found 'The Founders' quality under par and it feels more like a 'place mat' under the dogs water bowls with its wipe down finish. This could be a banger or it could fall flat on its face.

Seeing in Phosphene by José Parlá, by Poster Bob on May 5, 2023 18:29:16 GMT 1, Would you explain why you thought The Founders was sub par? I have not seen one in person, but the pictures on the website appear fine to me. I think it’d look great in a white frame. Perhaps my first Parla as they never offer me preorders and I always have meetings when the hand-finished, limited prints are released.

The quality of printing looks 'soft' as a digital print and the finishing is like a wipe down mat. I presume behind glass it may look better. Normally the AA releases are of a high quality but this is the only open edition I have bought and not sure how great the new one will be.

Seeing in Phosphene by José Parlá, by topper on May 5, 2023 18:55:17 GMT 1, This will be another quality timed edition and will look great. Good size, good price and I reckon edition numbers will be around 800-900 this time. I couldn’t fault the finishing on The Founders and didn’t need any varnish as mono colours. This is mine framed. Loving the Pahnl's!

Seeing in Phosphene by José Parlá, by its all about me on May 6, 2023 13:35:38 GMT 1, Out of interest, do people think these timed editions are sustainable for an artist's market? I think the idea behind timed editions is that it gives everyone an opportunity to buy rather than just the flippers and bots. It also makes flipping a less desirable activity as most people who want one would have already bought one. It also keeps the price down for those of us who are not rich but still like to buy art.
I know some people don't like timed editions but for me it's a win-win situation. The artist gets lots of royalties and the fans can always get what prints they want.

If you are buying for the actual art the number at the bottom is less relevant. Flippers dont like it of course. But there is still money to be made, just means they have to chose wisely ;-)

Seeing in Phosphene by José Parlá, by kai22 on May 6, 2023 15:59:44 GMT 1, This digital print looks terrible IMO. The matt varnish finish will also make it look cheaper - like a wipe clean dog mat.
Unflippable
Churning out flat digital prints does not lend itself to Parla’s work - stay away - save your money for an original by an up and coming artist.
Lazy print technique and business plan.

I don't see a timed edition as being "watered down" or "appeasing" to anybody. A great work of art is still a great work of art, whether there are 100 of them or 1,000. If you're pissed off that flipping opportunities are not what they used to be then that's your problem; nobody else's. Art is supposed to be about the pleasure you get from seeing it on your wall, not how much you can sell it for. And if you get ten times the pleasure out of x/100 print than a x/1000 print, then I think there's something quite bizarre about that.
