Not Urban but old Holy Family oil painting , by Rouen Cathedral on May 9, 2023 2:22:12 GMT 1, Received the following painting from family friend. Appears to be a fairly old painting of the Holy Family. Unlined canvas with a lot of nice craquelure on the oils. Appears to have been framed in a smaller frame and then reframed in a larger frame with the smaller frame. Pretty nicely executed in my opinion but a little clumsiness in some areas.
let me know if you have any thoughts on this one.

Not Urban but old Holy Family oil painting , by Adam The Collector on May 9, 2023 4:57:54 GMT 1, Nice looking picture but thats about it. There are some glaring issues with the execution, the face of Mary is just terrifying, Joseph is weak but the Christ child is done well. The pillow which He stands is also nice. Mary's face looks almost like it had a terrible restoration job done to it. Determining age is difficult, from the images of the back it looks to be 19th century but it could have just been relined during that period and painted earlier.

Not Urban but old Holy Family oil painting , by its all about me on May 9, 2023 10:28:54 GMT 1, I agree with what Adam says. There's some truly dreadful aspects to this; Mary's face in particular and the hands looks quite bad too and are not in proportion to the rest of the body. The pillow, however, is nicely painted and there's a fair attempt at chiaroscuro.
As far as price is concerned, I suspect it's not really worth anything at all - but I could be wrong. It looks unsigned and probably a rather poor copy of an existing painting by a better and more accomplished artist. You could put it in an auction and see but without a signature or proper provenance, I wouldn't raise your hopes too much.

Not Urban but old Holy Family oil painting , by churchwood on May 9, 2023 10:51:23 GMT 1, It could well be a copy of a more well known painting.
I had one a few years ago, it was a reasonable copy of a more well known painting by Sassoferato - it was equally horrific with a praying Virgin Mary - it gave the kids nightmares. The original it was copied from I think hangs in one of the London galleries permanantly.
It was to do with the Grand Tour and the well known artists would have a team of "interns" - all skilled painters who would make oil reproductions of their works. These copies were then sold on as mementos for the wealthy travellers to take back home. They churned out loads of these, when I showed it to someone who knew far more than me, they could tell it was a copy due to the way it had been painted. Underneath the oil on the surface of the canvas was this salmon pink primer and I was told this was used in the copy shops. It was still very old and in an old ornate frame but at the end of the day was a reproduction
