At first I was very intrigued by tvboy, it may be because we are both Italian and we both live in Barcelona, but then you realize that it is very boring, it seems like opening a newspaper page or twitter, someone dies and he stencils, the government says something and he stencils, it seems like a daily vignette(?) from a leftist periodical.

An ‘urban-pop artist’ recycling ideas of his contemporaries. The odd gem of an idea crushed under a generic execution style with little perspective on placement. All retrospective, and zero perspicacity. 

Looked like he has potential, I like that latest print, but most of the images look pretty weak, and the humour seems to be more about getting attention rather than making a useful or intelligent statement.

Becoming famous as the Italian Banksy?

my perception of TVBoy is that he is a sort of crafty cartoonist who uses street art (in this case poster art) to spread a commercial brand.

Poster art is beautiful, compared to stencils you can stick a poster in much less time. In Italy, TVBoy manages to put up posters quickly, in symbolic cities and popular places. As it happens, his posters always concern current events, politics, famous people, and are excellent for going on social media or tabloids.

He is not the only Italian to do this, there are others too, clever artists who make caricatures of the Pope, of footballers, of politicians, and who always appear in the newspapers and become real communication companies.

For me this is a way of making art that hides behind something.
I have nothing against making commercial art, also because his works are visually pleasing, but thinking of making social criticism when in reality the feeling is that one is seeking personal fame more than anything else is hypocrisy in my opinion.
And in the artistic field, if I embrace the thoughts of an artist, I don't want to be betrayed.


If you are interested in Italian poster art there are very respectable artists, less well known, but who carry out something truly valid from an artistic and also aesthetic point of view.
