UV Protective Films..., by John The Badgers on Jul 30, 2023 15:25:38 GMT 1, Not sure if this of any help to anyone, but fortunate to have quite a sunny aspect to where I have a lot of my bits, always concerned as to fading etc.
I've read about anti UV films that you can apply to windows etc.
As a trial, I bought a 1m sample, thought I'd give it a try on a couple of Perspex blocks, and a glass fronted book case to see how it goes.
Thought I would detail it to hopefully help anyone?
I bought 1m x 500mm from Active Window Films, cost ยฃ6.99 which included shipping. Quick delivery, and good to deal with -
I thought I would start with 2 Perspex blocks in which I have a couple of nice signed postcards.
Firstly, you need to make sure the surface squeaky clean, no dust etc. I made up in an old sprayer some warm water, with a bit of washing up liquid.
Once the surface clean, carefully handle the film, I used the Perspex block as a template, and you easily cut the film with a craft knife etc. Its crucial how you handle the film, it will crease a bit like tin foil, and then its no good, so be careful -
Use your spray to them liberally coat the surface of what you are protecting. Don't spare the horses with this, found the wetter the better.
The cut film has a protective layer. Get 2 bits of tape on the corner, and separate -
One side is slightly sticky, this goes on the surface you are protecting. I also sprayed this face with the solution. This enables you to 'slide' the film into position.
I then used a rubber blade I use to clean my windows, and use this to squeegee any excess liquid and any air bubbles. This very straight forward, you very quickly get rid of any.
That's about it, all really straight forward.
You cant see any traces of the film, perfectly clear. Would have no hesitation about tackling this job myself on my windows.
Hope this helps.

On your windows, no issues when cleaning them etc? The film pretty resistant to scratching etc?

Was thinking post-it size sketch coloured in felt-tip pens.. one with the film one without..
See how they compare after summer.. ๐

A great idea.
I did wonder how effective it is, all the bumf telling me its pretty effective, but liking the idea of your experiment.
One of my Perspex blocks has a nice card I'm really chuffed with, signed in felt tip pen, and this is what I wanted to protect, hence tackling the job.
I have some spare, just PM me your address, and I'll get it over to you.
As you are now Chief UV film tester, would be great if you can keep us updated on the test.

UV Protective Films..., by Morfx on Sept 3, 2023 15:05:34 GMT 1, So... Mr Badgers kindly sent me some of his film to trail..
I've set this up for a 1 year trail in direct sunlight. Will check back every couple of months.
Was going to use two different frames but couldn't guarantee the glass was the same.

UV Protective Films..., by John The Badgers on Jul 27, 2024 18:38:20 GMT 1, Tough crowd in tonight.
Firstly, thank you for conducting the experiment Morfx.
Just my comments/thoughts? The above pictures from Mr Morfx to me definitely show an improvement when the film used?
I am aware with these films, as well as framing glass, you will never stop UV damage? Many factors which will affect degradation.
Funnily enough, I actually checked the blocks I coated last weekend, and was pleasantly surprised they still look spot on?
My place here quite 'sunny', the items are both signed with probably not the best pens, and they still look spot on?
I would definitely use it again.

There is an improvement, but it's minuscule to my eyes. For the cost and effort of installing this film, it seems hardly worth it, no? Bring back the yellow window film we had on clothes shop windows the 80's I say๐ ... Maybe that didn't work either, as I haven't seen it in a while...

UV Protective Films..., by its all about me on Jul 28, 2024 12:12:39 GMT 1, I'm no expert on these things but it looks like your experiment involved using felt tip pens. I presume that this will deteriorate far more quickly in the sun than ink on a silk screen print. You are talking about two very different mediums.

A print would maybe just last a little longer, but thatโs still not good.

Have a nice signed card from the fab Courtney Barnett which was signed pretty much with a felt tip pen. I used those Perspex blocks, so no real protection there.
Since using this film, all still spot on -
Made me chuckle Mr Fuckwitt as to your yellow film on shop windows. There's a shoe shop catering for a sensible shoe here in Cow Town that employs this tactic each evening.
