Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by set0312 on Oct 10, 2023 5:09:03 GMT 1, I had a canvas that I wanted to get stretched and framed. It was 100x80 cm, so not small, though not enormous. I went to Castelli in Los Angeles and we decided on a maple frame. As I checked out, the person helping me was like this is all real cherry so it's going to be really expensive. To clarify, all I'm doing here is floating a canvas in a frame. There is no glass. I paid 700 dollars. 600 for the frame and another 100 or so to stretch the canvas.
I just got the piece back. It looks fantastic, but upon close examination, there's a cherry-colored tape fully covering the back frame of the frame, as if they're trying to hide something. Also, I can easily see a lighter wood that certainly isn't cherry hiding behind that tape.
Did they just give me some cherry veneers and make me pay a ton for something that isn't cherry? Does it make sense that the structure of the frame would be made with something that isn't cherry?

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by Jules Leotard on Oct 10, 2023 5:30:18 GMT 1, Your photo needs more light to see the grain better in the upper piece of wood. The "it's defo pine" looks to be a shim.
(also, not a professional, but I have used that tape when framing before)

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by Humble Art Collector on Oct 10, 2023 5:36:59 GMT 1, If it is not Cherry this is pretty deceptive 100% solid cherry should be cherry not a veneer and the price at 600 would be very fair and 100 for stretching is fair. I would expect a solid cherry frame to be more than 600 when you factor in wood and labor. But from the images I cannot tell if that is a veneer or just the 3 sides of the cherry are finished and the inside is not. The images do not explain the whole picture. The top outter board just peeking out could be solid cherry based on the little bit of grain I see. The inner blond wood is a spacer do not worry about that.the tape seems to be sealing the 2.

That is exactly what I was trying to say in text. It looks like cherry to me from the little bit I see just not "finished".

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by set0312 on Oct 10, 2023 5:42:18 GMT 1, Thanks for the input all. I'll upload some new photos in the morning when there's actually some decent light. I am a complete neophyte regarding all this stuff. Glad to know that unfinished cherry isn't out of the question.

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by Harveyn on Oct 10, 2023 7:11:15 GMT 1, Cherry wood is light until stained so it could be Cherry. I would simple ask the framer and tell them you can see some exposed light wood on the reverse.

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by from mjolnir on Oct 10, 2023 8:53:47 GMT 1, Is it not that the frame itself is cherry, but then to space the artwork up to the lip of the frame they have added pine spacers (which is what you can see)? And I think they usually add that tape for a range of reasons, eg if the wood is stained then it stops the stain rubbing off onto the wall which it can do over years with heat and humidity. So it doesn't look dodgy to me

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by topper on Oct 10, 2023 9:55:51 GMT 1, It would be more expensive to veneer that frame in cherry than it would to use cherry. If the tape is only on the back, it's an attempt to tidy it up. If you can see cherry around the front in one piece, it's cherry. If it's veneer in one piece, it's a really expensive piece of work.

Did I get ripped off? Fake cherry veneer?, by Fluffy Pillow on Oct 10, 2023 14:14:37 GMT 1, My guess is you are second guessing... Cherry outer (the frame) looks cherry to me - upgrade from non-stained basic wood frame at checkout. Could ask the framer and "see it" in the same orientation if you didn't mock it out at handoff.
Don't want to also pay for cherry wood spacers only to be hidden, thus pine blocking/backing. With cardboard stape.. Not silver duct tape, clear packaging tape, colored painters tape, nor black electricians tape.
Veneers may repeat in a pattern if the pieces are cut the same. Look for swirls, divots, streaks within the wood and see if they replicate elsewhere.
My two pennies.

I'm not an expert on wood, or anything for that matter. But in looking at this website talking about maple wood, the pictures of the wood look light in color like in the back. Perhaps the front of it was stained a darker color. If you shine a flashlight into the interior of the front, is there a distinctive change in the color of the wood?
