George Condo ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Print For Sale, by kfroms on Jun 3, 2024 21:13:41 GMT 1, I got into this art scene 20 years ago as it was not corporate (but really exciting with new artists), but many of us are turned off by some companies like AA (flogging established artists in their twilight years). It appears that these AA vetting processes are nothing more than a marketing ploy to contact and build a rapport with collectors so they can spend even more with them. I work in marketing so itโs what I would do if I was them. They make them feel special thinking they are selected and passed the test. The people who are buying multiple releases from AA (including all their timed releases) have been lured in and are falling for it, although Iโm sure they think it has worked in their favour. Weโve seen similar tactics employed by Heni when people think they have to buy everything unless they might miss out on something they really want. Itโs also why they do all these draws / lotteries to build up their contact and client databases - not to be fair and giving everyone an opportunity. It is 100% clear that AA couldnโt give a toss whether they are resold or not, just as long as the people buying, keep on buying. Sorry if it upsets any of the AA faithful. For what itโs worth, I am always genuinely happy if someone has got something they really wanted to display on their walls and I definitely donโt begrudge them. This. same strategy than Rolex and PP, Hermes, Chanel and a few car brands. Gullible customers buy a lot of stuff on offer and hope getting an allocation for that Daytona, Nautilus, Birkin etc. Works a treat for the brands! :-)

Gullible customers buy a lot of stuff on offer and hope getting an allocation for that Daytona, Nautilus, Birkin etc. Works a treat for the brands! :-) I would think if you've been collecting art for 20 years you'd either appreciate AA's approach more, or, at least would understand that there is no way to satisfy a diverse array of collectors.
People didn't like the POW bunfights cause we had to sit in front of our computers. Also folks don't like the POW VIP list. People don't like Graffiti Prints lotteries, don't like Obey drops, don't like pre-sales, don't like open editions, don't like timed editions...you get the point. If you're a business it must be exhausting trying to figure out how to navigate a release. Especially as they grow in popularity.
Fwiw, I've bought in all the above methods, including the camping out for Banksy prints (long live CYW) and none are right, they all cause different sets of problems.
I've bought from AA before, but this was my first time being contacted. Speaking for myself, it wasn't an interview at all, I really just spoke about art for 30 minutes - it was probably the most enjoyable call I had all week.
I don't think you're wrong that it creates demand, and hype, but I'd argue that's the outcome of the process not the purpose.

Well, to be honest, when you build up a collector base that has been incredibly loyal to you, and esp the ones that actually abided by their resale clauses and are now holding pieces that are trading at -60-70% under premium (and at one point were selling for a 200-300% secondary market premium), we'd like to think that leaves a sour taste in some people's mouths. Obviously, have the utmost respect for people that didn't resell and still continue to buy from AA, but we also completely understand why some people would want to make atleast some money back from one of the few releases this year that has some margins. Even then though, the margins aren't that high - some emerging artists had significantly higher margins during 2021 (Such as Javier Calleja - Up to You : retail ~3k USD, was trading for as high as $40k USD during peak, and now at about ~6k USD). Show me an Up to You for $6k. You have it listed for $23k on your website and $24.5k on eBay. Iโll happily give you $6k for it.

George Condo ๐บ๐ธ New Print Release โข Print For Sale, by Archives Gallery on Jun 4, 2024 1:37:48 GMT 1, Unbelievable how much BS there is in this threadโฆ. A bunch of idiots thinking their nonsense is going to depress the secondary market. Lets not derail the thread I just figured showing actual price data for the piece for the last 9 months would be the best way to show how much of nonsense I'm speaking.
Mines not for sale until the market recovers significantly, as I'd be selling at a huge loss. I do have a couple available around the 12k USD mark, which have not really attracted any interest at all over this year because I do think thats still overpriced compared to where the markets at right now.
I was simply giving pricing guidance on an edition that has no public sale records based on the supply and demand i'm seeing privately. Indeed, quite a few people already know what I'm offering the Condo works at, and most aren't really interested at that price even. For people that think this is an easy 2x or 3x their money, I wish them the best of luck! A stronger art market helps us all at the end of the day.
