Martin Whatson Originals For Sale, by sean1397 on Mar 10, 2024 1:30:07 GMT 1, JL - you don't think the listed prices are at or within 10% of what these types of works or similar have sold for in the past 3 months? The only times I comment on prices are when they are 50-100% higher than recent sales. I dont think you'll find any where Im like that price is 8% too high. Anyways if these prices aren't market the pieces will go back in the closet and come out again in a year or two - no biggie

Martin Whatson Originals For Sale, by sean1397 on Mar 10, 2024 1:32:36 GMT 1, Stylewars - it can't go up forever. What was it up? 500-800% over 5-6 years and now for work done by hand it's prob down what? 25%? Now the non hf stuff - look out. There are 1000s of those.
Anyways, what 5% of artists are flat or up the past 6 months? It's good to have a 500+% run before a downturn. If you find any art or stocks or coins or houses (houses are prob closes) that never have a downturn please hit me up!

Martin Whatson Originals For Sale, by LJCal on Mar 10, 2024 4:26:06 GMT 1, I don't know Whatsons market that well, he's never an artist I collected. All I can say is I sold a 180x120cm canvas summer last year on consignment for ยฃ20,000 ($25,000) and I had people fighting over it, was really surprised at the level of interest. Based on that very small sample of his market the asking prices don't seem crazy.

Martin Whatson Originals For Sale, by sean1397 on Mar 10, 2024 9:16:49 GMT 1, LJCal - to be fair, his stuff, like many artists is down some. It still sells but below where it did two years. ago.
5-6 years ago, you could buy his works anywhere and he would sell them directly. They would sit at galleries and online.
An example of his prices:
5 year ago, Hf prints maybe $500-800. He didnt do non hf prints, 30x30 cm canvases $800-1000, 60x60 canvases $1500-1750, 100x100 canvases maybe $2500-3000 if that.
At the peak maybe 2 years ago, untouched regular prints in large editions $2000-2500, hf prints $4000-7000, 30x30 canvases $6000-7000 (I was offered $12000 for a golfer 30x40, 60x60 canvases $10k-14k, 100x100 canvases, some went over $20k.
Today - untouched prints in large editions - $500-800 (they have been slaughtered), hf prints $2250-4500, 30x30 cm canvases $4500-5500 (seen them sell recently for over $5000, 60x60 canvases wider range based on image $6000-9000, 100x100 prob $8000-14000 depending on image
So yes they have come down quite a bit like many artist but after an insane run that had to end at some point. I wish all my investments would go up 400-700% and then down 20-30%. My prices reflect prices that have been paid in the past few months. Maybe they are 5% high but they aren't off recent sales. That said, selling is much slower than when every show sold out with a line.
Only time will tell if they go back up or continue down and it'll prob depend a lot on how many more prints are made and what galleries he does or doesn't join
I am not really sure why some are acting like these prices are out of line other than they love negativity or hate that I often point out prices that are 100-200% to high. In these cases, multiple 30cm pieces have sold over 5k in the past 2 months and several 60cm ones have sold over $7500-8000 range. That said a few are sitting at lower prices with images that haven't ever sold great. I dont know where the portraits would sell - haven't ever seen them sell before. Canvases are still hard to get and I'll bet that at least the canvases sell within 3-4 weeks. He has many fans and canvases are hard to get. Prints, not so much

Martin Whatson Originals For Sale, by sean1397 on Mar 10, 2024 9:29:47 GMT 1, Banksy, probably the most popular artist in this genre - his prints are down 53% from their top and somehow one reading this thread would think Martin's prices are way out of whack with the market - some people didnt like hi when he posted here years ago, some have never liked his work, and some dislike me, but to say his prices have been worse than the market is nuts. Markets go up and down. The only question is where they will be in a few years and none of us know

Martin Whatson Originals For Sale, by LJCal on Mar 10, 2024 9:50:05 GMT 1, It was only about 6-7 months back I sold the above canvas but Iโm sure like most his market has dropped further since then. As you say I canโt think of any artists in the urban scene that havenโt seen a significant fall in value, most have halved or more. Even in the wider contemporary market you can probably count on one hand the number of famous artists who havenโt seen double digit falls in value.
