HM Prices, by eD on Mar 14, 2024 13:11:52 GMT 1, Hey all,
Does anyone have a view on when/if Harland Miller print prices may bounce back to previous levels? or are the prices we are seeing at the moment a permanent adjustment and new market level?
Interested in opinions
Cheers eD

His market seems to be 100% in the UK, which hasn't boded well for him.

Harland hasn’t evolved adequately ( which can be said of some of the artists mentioned ) but more so has has some terrible management
All good art is stolen and recreated, that hasn’t stopped Warhol or koons, banksy or Picasso
I personally can only see further drops never to return
I don’t want to be right but anyone saying the opposite is likely to have skin in the game

HM Prices, by Ottomatik on Mar 14, 2024 13:38:36 GMT 1, Seems many artist are doing the penguin book thing lately. Dare I say, some look on the same level as HM. With prints priced more than £10K less. James McQueen is putting out some impressive work. His prints look top notch as well.

HM Prices, by drip on Mar 14, 2024 14:57:26 GMT 1, Art is a funny thing. Buyers want innovation, something new, but they also want repetition. They want artists to do the thing, the thing they're best known for, but also don't be stagnant and samey, but also don't do the new stuff, we like the old stuff, play the classics, but my god, you still doing that stuff?
Harland Miller had a good thing going there until everyone and their dog started making their own Penguin covers. He was slowly (and expensively) putting out work, quality over quantity, and then others with less self-restraint decided to vomit every idea they've ever had onto a Penguin book cover, and for less money.
There was a period there where I couldn't open a magazine in a waiting room without seeing a London apartment interior with some gigantic sloppy Penguin book cover on the wall, or several walls, somewhere.
He'll always be the original, the guy, but the interior stylists and the high street pumped out so much of this twee, humorous Penguin stuff, it's now got that "Keep Calm and Carry On" energy from a few years ago.
I think joke-based art can be a bit like joke-based tattoos. It seems a good idea at the time.

HM Prices, by Sunny Garcia on Mar 14, 2024 15:21:00 GMT 1, He’s signed by White Cube so there isn’t any comparing him to the other artists doing “penguins” imo.
The question is what happens now? They keep selling new OG works in the £150K range, so obviously they have “some” demand. That being said, how a good penguin cover only sells for £60K is a real concern. I’m surprised that someone (a client) from WC didn’t compete for it.

HM Prices, by drip on Mar 14, 2024 15:27:10 GMT 1, A few times now, I've seen folk say that Harland is just ripping off the Connor McQueen Brothers.
That's kinda sad, but probably also tells you a little about the different markets. Harland is aiming for a smaller market with more money. Below that, James McQueen, the Conmen Brothers and lord knows who else, are aiming their high street stuff, scatter gun-style, at the Turkey Teef and tiny dog crowd.

HM Prices, by LJCal on Mar 14, 2024 17:01:21 GMT 1, Miller has been around for 30+ years so pretty sure he’ll bounce back. As far as getting back to previous highs that may never happen especially in real terms, but I’d wager he’ll return to growth. HM has blue chip representation with years of solo shows, he’s held in major collections around the world including many institutions. Comparing him to the Connor Brothers or James McQueen doesn’t make sense, his target is a completely different market to those guys. It always amazes me how short sited people are in terms of the market, when things are flying everyone thinks it will keep growing, when the market is down no one thinks it will recover.

HM Prices, by Georgie Poppit on Mar 14, 2024 20:40:07 GMT 1, In the good years he didn’t manage to break into the big league at auction price wise. Many other WC artists did become blue chip but he never has. The Murder painting (at Christie’s last week) was a really beautifully executed work, classic Penguin, good size etc and made £85k. Personally I feel there’s such a lack of confidence in his market it’s too much to ever come back from.

HM Prices, by Love Is In The Air on Mar 14, 2024 22:19:52 GMT 1, I think he probably peaked at a point he will never get back to but also think he will come back to some degree in terms of prints if WC and Manifold STOP putting out more editions and allow demand to build up again with some new shows.
Also at it's peak the Murder painting would have done well but I am not sure there are dozens and dozens of collectors who want the word Murder in massive letters on their walls (I could be wrong). It is not as wall friendly as Love Saves The Day or similar. But the result was still very weak and I am not disputing that his print prices have fallen off a cliff...

I get the art market (and most markets) are down but before the downturn he never managed to move into the area of being considered blue chip when many of his peers did. Not sure I agree 95% - there are lots of artists performing very well and it’s still difficult to buy many of them primary. I actually believe now is a good time to buy and a deflated market creates opportunities if you know what you’re doing.

HM Prices, by Dahmer on Mar 15, 2024 12:10:39 GMT 1, Pretty sure the hand finished print at tate ward isint going to get anywhere near its low estimate, if it did that would would make it more expensive than the massive purple canvas at christies.
White cube currently have 3/4 editions for sale that have not sold out in years sometimes.
