defining street art?, by skendo1 on Jul 1, 2024 17:25:19 GMT 1, I love seeing the variety of art posted here but it makes me curious about how folks define "street art" (or, perhaps, the forum's raison d'etre has evolved/need not be policed). For me, as a kid of the 1980s, my earliest exposure was graffiti and then wheat-pastes and stencils (which is not to suggest that these were the earliest or even paradigmatic examples, just my referents). And so, when I think about the category's essential characteristics, it's aspects like a public (often site specific) nature that includes some social commentary/critique/rebellion(?). But I'm not sure that is really a coherent definition. Does or should it include artists like Jose Parla's current works? Jenny Holzer? Yoshitomo Nara? Robert Indiana? Mark Bradford? Vik Muniz? At what point does the category lose helpful meaning?

Would be an interesting discussion to have, especially because it seems that even most "street artists" have really lost their ways (most recently Invader). But I'm not sure that you'll get a proper discussion on here.

- it is the lowest cost form of artwork as the canvas is the walls - in its purist form the artist has no financial gain
- the positioning (how it looks in situ) is just as important as the artwork itself and the artist wants their work to be noticed
- it can be anti-establishment if there was no permission
- you don’t need artistic talent, just a good idea
- if it’s on the street, leave it there (that especially means councils and local authorities)
For me, these are some key elements of street art…
