Antony Micallef - Portrait of Francis Bacon

Signed and numbered by the artist.
ยฃ1,535 Enter the draw, Pre order open now avantarte.co/amicallefOfficial launch on Tuesday, 27 August โ 14:00 BST
A visceral tribute by Antony Micallef probes the limits of printmaking.
In a painting inspired by Lucian Freudโs portrait of Francis Bacon, Antony Micallef favoured thick, abstract impasto over discernable human features. Micallef shares an affinity with both artists and their raw representation of human forms. In Portrait of Francis Bacon, Micallef mirrors the way Bacon uses paint to elicit an emotional response, not only to the painted image, but to the physical condition of the paint itself.
Printmakers at Make-Ready worked closely with Micallef to achieve something he initially thought impossible. Layer upon layer of cured ink and satin varnish recreate the depth and texture of his painting, including a section where solidified paint extends beyond the edge of the canvas.
The edition was conceived in collaboration with Bridgeman Images and the Lucian Freud Archive.
"I've always found Freud's painting of Francis Bacon intriguing and saw it as a cross-pollination of significance of these two painters. I wanted to portray it visually, echoing Bacon's techniques with my own visceral style, using the paint to enhance the vitality of the subject."

Antony Micallef Print Release - Portrait of Francis Bacon, by sevrin on Aug 7, 2024 10:43:55 GMT 1, The level of printing on these is insane! 'Make-Ready' are really pushing the boundaries of what's possible with UV pigment printing, building layer upon layer to obtain as near to the original 'impasto' painting technique as you can get.

Antony Micallef Print Release - Portrait of Francis Bacon, by Bram on Aug 7, 2024 11:23:45 GMT 1, Love it. I wonder if the inspiration was to paint the portrait of Bacon in a Bacon style? To me it looks more like a painting of Freud by Bacon rather than a painting of Bacon by Freud.

Antony Micallef Print Release - Portrait of Francis Bacon, by Acme Thunderer on Aug 7, 2024 12:49:58 GMT 1, 50 layer inkjet?? So this is printef one colour at a time? Then why not screen print? Or is this a new fancy way of saying inkjet? And charging more for a giclee? This is a good link to explain about UV pigment printing as it is from one of the manufacturers of the digital printing equipment.
www.rolanddg.eu/en-gb/technologies/uv-printing
The โpigmentโ is the UV ink used which is UV light resistant.
Obviously there is skill involved in being able to scan the painting and set up printer files to get the results.
The โ57 layersโ is marketing spiel and not 57 different colours.

Antony Micallef Print Release - Portrait of Francis Bacon, by STP on Aug 7, 2024 13:19:06 GMT 1, "When artworking the texture, the objective was to make the print imitate the thick brushstrokes of the original painting. To achieve the right colours, instead of creating layers with a mixture of coloured inks, we decided to build the texture using only white ink and varnish, then print colour on top. First, we printed the main texture raised to 1mm at the highest points, and then we printed an additional 0.5mm of texture in specific areas. Finally, we covered the figure with gloss varnish. The contrast between the background's satin finish and the figureโs gloss finish adds to the overall depth of the print."

I don't give a toss what it (or indeed any other print) is made of.
The end result is all that matters to me.

The process creating a raised surface and texture is unique and worth noting. Inkjets can be done in a lazy manner for sure. This one doesn't seem lazy at all?

The end result is all that matters to me.
Fair enough but obviously the method is an important part of the end result.

The process creating a raised surface and texture is unique and worth noting. Inkjets can be done in a lazy manner for sure. This one doesn't seem lazy at all? Absolutely, very far from being 'lazy' this process was not easy to achieve, it is more akin to using a 3d printer, but with a flat-bed digital printer, on paper, Make-Ready used the same technique for the 'raised dots' on the new PINS print, it's a fascinating process to watch.

Yet Every time I see a new Micallef I miss the old Micallef much. But move on we must.

Antony Micallef Print Release - Portrait of Francis Bacon, by Love Is In The Air on Aug 8, 2024 12:22:38 GMT 1, They've made big efforts to get depth to this print and I am interested to see one in the flesh - but given how thick the paint is when Micallef produces his originals I fear this print will look a bit flat by comparison.
