what stopped you buying in the end?

So why ask in the first place?

So the Hammer price was probably less than 14K.

And the seller received around 12K.

So if the seller sells one on here for 15K you have done well.

There’s not a chance you’re getting £25k for this at the moment. When prints like Diacetoxyscirpenol at passing at auction with a $25k low estimate, no chance you’re getting more.

All Hirst spots are down the last year. Along with the market. Last all in at auction was £15k which is low but I wouldn’t expect more than a £15k hammer at auction right now.

Phillips would want it at a £10-15k reserve. That’s not to say thats what it is worth but it’s your best shot at liquidity.. and there is no way you’d risk that reserve.

I think people haven't figured out how the spreads work. I wouldn't be surprised if some galleries move these out at £30-35k, I know one dealer that has sold a spot print to just about every wannabe billionaire in manhattan, and for a print of this size this is what he would be charging. Most galleries will need to sell this at £25k+ to turn a profit, I don't expect they're flying out the door but they will move at this price eventually. At auction absolutely you can buy these for less, and yes some sellers will be lucky to net £14-15k if there's no competitive bidding. If you're keen to sell and need to liquidate then expect to be returned probably £14-18k, if you're patient it may start with a £2.

The value is dependent who is selling it, who is buying, where it's been sold and the prevailing market conditions. I expect if my Mrs took this down the local Sunday car boot sale she would be lucky to get a £100, similarly a swanky gallery on Bond Street may well sell it at £50,000. In summary art is a very opaque and imperfect market, so it's probably best not to get bothered if someone's view on value is way off from yours, you could both be right.
