Woman at Work Margaret Calvert, by stevec on Nov 3, 2024 2:59:44 GMT 1,
Apologies if this has been posted already but the legend that is Margaret Calvert is crowdfunding a book titled "Woman at Work". I am quite confident in saying every (UK) member here is familiar with Margaret's work.
The funding is about 5k GBP off the target and there are some great options on the site including prints, your name in the book, etc.
Please check out the site and if you can please support this effort to create what I believe will be a seminal book.

thanks, Steve

Thank you for the heads‑up on this crowdfunding project for Margaret Calvert, about which I was previously clueless.
I am fond of the work of Jock Kinneir and Calvert.
As a team, they revolutionised signage in the UK in the 1960s.
An interesting anecdote is that, previously, British road signs would exclusively feature block‑letter text.
Kinneir and Calvert ushered in the combined usage of uppercase and lowercase typefaces.
They understood road users could register instructions and location names more quickly this way.
Such improved efficiency lies in the fact that people will often recognise words and names in different ways. As is also the case with some logos or graffiti tags, the mental‑recognition process can often be more immediate when the viewer just scans the overall, visual shape of the combined uppercase and lowercase letters โ before they have even read what those letters actually spell.

Woman at Work Margaret Calvert, by PC Baby on Nov 3, 2024 11:03:52 GMT 1, Thanks stevec for making us all aware of Margaret Calvert's work and the fact that there are persons and thoughts behind these all-too-familiar road signs which we all take for granted. The fact that she is actually revolutionizing them by bringing in women is remarkable.
The book & Traffic Typeface print are on order and I hope the crowdfunding will get there without any Diversions!

Perhaps not as articulate as Met's great contribution, but recall when she was on Top Gear a few years ago?
Gives a great insight into her incredible contribution here -
Appreciate the clip title mentions a Vauxhall, but bear with it, she appears as part of it.
