Artist Fundraiser for MSF/ Palestine 18 Nov - 1 Dec 2024, by mojo on Nov 16, 2024 18:26:13 GMT 1, Artists wary of discussing Gaza war, says Jeremy Deller - LINK
The culture war has made artists wary of discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict, according to Jeremy Deller, who has donated work to a charity auction to support Mรฉdecins Sans Frontiรจres (MSF).
Deller is one of more than 260 artists, including Yinka Shonibare, Wolfgang Tillmans, Mark Wallinger, Mona Hatoum, Sir John Akomfrah, Jesse Darling and Dame Sonia Boyce, who have contributed work that will be sold at the exhibition and auction in aid of the medical charityโs work in Palestine.
โYou have to be careful, because it is politicised and it shouldnโt be,โ Deller said when asked if he thought artists feared repercussions. โItโs become part of the war โฆ the culture war and the war itself have run concurrently. I think thatโs maybe made some people a bit fearful, wary.โ
More than 300 works will be for sale in an online auction that runs from 18 November until 1 December. An exhibition of the work will be held at 14 Wharf Road, north London.
Rana Begum, one of several Royal Academy alumni who organised the auction, said the event served a double purpose: a way for artists to raise funds and a โsafe spaceโ for them to discuss the conflict.
โIt just hasnโt been easy for people to talk, to be able to have a dialogue, even to understand, even to learn. People are so afraid of doing or saying anything,โ she said. โI think what this auction is doing, and something far beyond raising money, is also giving a space for voices, for diverse voices.โ
This year the Fossil Free Books campaign successfully pressed several book festivals to sever ties with the investment firm Baillie Gifford because of its investments in fossil fuel companies and Israeli state-owned arms manufacturers. Afterwards, some argued that โart should not be politicalโ and that โart should be for artโs sakeโ.
Deller said: โโArt for artโs sakeโ is a meaningless term. Itโs like saying writing should be for writingโs sake, or film-making for film-makingโs sake. It doesnโt work like that. You canโt unless you have an exalted position as an artist where you can just make abstract work and get paid handsomely for it. You know, there are people like that. But on the whole thatโs not how it works. I studied art history, itโs never worked like that.โ
However, Deller said art did not have to be political and that it was a mistake to expect artists to offer solutions.
โI donโt think we should look to artists for answers. Artists shouldnโt expect artists to solve the problems of the world, because they tried it. It hasnโt worked,โ he said.
โOften very rich, powerful people think artists can solve the worldโs ills. We can raise money for charities โฆ Live Aid, basically. Thatโs the most practical, immediate thing that we can do and thatโs what this exhibition and auction is.โ
Dr Natalie Roberts, the executive director of MSF UK, said the organisation was deeply moved by and grateful for the generosity of the artists who had supported its work.
She said: โTheir creativity and commitment are a testament to the power of art to inspire compassion and solidarity. These funds will have a direct impact on our ability to provide immediate life-saving medical care to some of the most marginalised people in society.โ

Artist Fundraiser for MSF/ Palestine 18 Nov - 1 Dec 2024, by loui on Nov 18, 2024 23:34:24 GMT 1, LINKโOften very rich, powerful people think artists can solve the worldโs ills.โ Pretty peculiar thought. I don't see very rich, powerful people thinking about artists solving the world's problems at all. They think about sending space shuttles to the moon, about yachts that cost billion, about submarines to the bottom of our seas. They think about their business and investment goals and they may even think about which artists to invest in. But very rich powerful people don't think about solving the world's problems, let alone about artists solving the world's problems. If at all they would think about solving the world's ills, theyโd think it will only be them that could solve those. Many examples about; trump, musk etc ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ

I started this thread to let people know about an Artist Fundraiser being held on behalf of MSF with a view to raising as much money as possible to support them with their life saving work in war torn Palestine. It would be really appreciated if we could try and keep the thread positive, there is absolutely no need for any negativity or criticism and definitely not any rude childish name calling. All of the artworks have been very kindly donated by the artists and everyone involved in this fundraiser is giving their time voluntarily, 100% of all the money raised goes to MSF. If you would like to bid on any of the work that has been kindly donated then please do so, it will really help MSF save lives in Palestine. link to catalogue

I think youโve guessed by now mojo that I donโt hold you in high regard. That goes for your framing tactics as well. On the contrary, your baseness will never be able to be justified no matter how many posts for charity you post. If I was you I would now probably mention how kind I am to bump this thread. You are a pathetic creature ๐ป
No one is suggesting Deller isnโt free to say what he want. The things he says however are open for dispute. And he says some weird things. Maybe he shouldโve hired you. You seem to be making a habit of trying to frame people. Mojo the king of framing (since 2014) ๐ Tart. There are still 100 israeli hostages in gaza. Genocide? Watch thebpopulation growth in gaza. Free the hostages and the war stops.
Israel left gaza years ago, this occuption shit is getting old...but well...europe is next so youll see for yourself

Israel left gaza years ago, this occuption shit is getting old...but well...europe is next so youll see for yourself The tactics of most wars is dehumanising the other party. That goes for Hezbollah, Fatah and Hamas, who indoctrinate their people saying the Israelis are pigs, as well as for the Israelis who indoctrinate their people saying the people in Gaza are pigs. Pigs are easier to kill for most than people.
Personally I despise people who take other people in hostage and they should be held responsible for that. To make 2.000.000 people in Gaza responsible is the other end of the stick.
Iโm not keen on the Iranian regime nor the Russian(Putin said all Ukrainians are Nazis ๐), let alone the Chechnyan for that matter, with their wicked thoughts and deeds, but there also live people there.

Artist Fundraiser for MSF/ Palestine 18 Nov - 1 Dec 2024, by Georgie Poppit on Nov 21, 2024 9:01:55 GMT 1, I get that MSF are neutral and just want to help people but some of the art shown is very anti Israel. There are very much two sides in this conflict. Please post examples of what you think is anti-Israel. I took a quick scroll through and didnโt see anything of note. How about โCarpet Bombing (made by Israel)โ? If Hamas gave back the hostages this would stop.
