Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2008 15:52:19 GMT 1, ronhill your quite right and I guess my post was made in the heat of the moment. I don't think Guy would give a second thought to these comments.

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by robinbanks on Aug 7, 2008 15:53:50 GMT 1, Everyone is entitled to their views, Im sure if Guy was reading this he wouldn't give a s**t. Artists get used to people either loving or hating their work, it comes with the territory. and seeing as the majority like the work, I cant see him complaining too much.
Completely agree with this!
There have been artists of equal or greater talent who have been subject to comments a lot worse than the odd one or two on this thread, and I can't ever remember seeing a Moderator jump in and call it "outrageous" or disgraceful".

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by leeoman on Aug 7, 2008 15:59:46 GMT 1, One other comment I would make is. Irrespective of whether you think this piece is overpriced to rubbish Guy's work with statements like "car boot sale" and "I could produce this in a week" is just ridiculous. Just because you don't like his work does not mean that it is rubbish. I do hope Guy has not read this thread because for a talented artists who has spent his live developing his skills to have to read such ill thought out flippant comments is outrageous & disgraceful. Even though they appear to be coming from less than 2 or 3% of those people who have commented.
i completely agree, i think he would be gutted if he read this thread, the bottom line is his work will appeal to more people than the one's who don't like it which is all that matters, i think its good for all to express there own view's but is there a need to be a tw*t about it....the answer is NO this guy has devoted his life to art, i think people should keep there harsh views to them self. just gutted i don't have the money to buy it because i think it looks great

Firstly I did change my view on this RB. Secondly the comments I make on this board are comments that are my opinion and are made by me as an individual. This was a thread started by me on which I feel entitled to comment.
As a moderator all I am asked to do is help make sure people post in the correct area and that the subject matter is appropriate.
Are you suggesting that I should sit silently in the background and not air my opinions?

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by graeme501 on Aug 7, 2008 16:22:09 GMT 1, i'd like to think that guy denning wouldnt be gutted if he read this thread, did he honestly think that every1 would like his work ?
whether he has devoted his life to art or not is irrelevent, he produces art, which, as happens with all artists, is both praised and critizised, and to say that i should keep my views to myself is ridiculous
as for my ill thought comments being outrageous & disgraceful, that may be your view as a fan of denning, but my honest comments of criticism are just as valid as your comments praising denning

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2008 16:27:56 GMT 1, Graeme not disagreeing with you at all in your last post. Unfortunately thats not how you expressed it in your previous posts. I think your comment that you could produce this type of work in a week was inappropriate. But thats my opinion and I imagine its going to remain different from yours.

your denning is clearly one of his top pieces, i doubt i'd be able to create that in a week, what i said was an average denning, some works on paper and so forth, who knows, maybe when i have a spare week ill give it a try
but although i'm not a fan of denning, it seems that most people are, so i wish u goodluck with the sale, and wont comment any more on the subject

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by graeme501 on Aug 7, 2008 16:45:59 GMT 1, tell u what, i have about a spare week before i go back 2 uni, when our art shop will be open, so i can get supplies
ill give it a go, then u can have it since i seem to have thrown around my negative comments about denning all over ur sale thread, which is not the place for it
if its any good, u can frame it pride of place, next to ur denning, if its rubbish (most likely) feel free to set it on fire

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by orangematt on Aug 7, 2008 16:46:29 GMT 1, I always bear in mind that if a piece of art is created to appeal to the common denominator... the whole world would be full of ikea printed canvas ' !!!
the truth is if one person likes a piece - if it speaks to them or inspires someone to do something creative themselves - then the work is done.
also , criticisms , though they can cut deep , can push things further than admiration ... a real driving force ..
Though , its also gotta be said alot of comments found on forums and chat boards are little better than an extension of school yard bullying.. one up manship is also rife .. also art world intelligentsia/snobbery ... but ignoring all that .. that what doesnt kill us , only makes us stronger .

Guy Denning Original Canvas - For Sale, by ctc2 on Aug 7, 2008 17:03:54 GMT 1, Harveyn: I hope you know that I was not meaning to say that I thought your specific piece was overpriced. I just look at the overall prices for his work and then see what else in the market place I can buy for the same amount or less. When I do this comparison, I feel a little tentative. I admit it is a little of the argument used against Banksy (why pay $$$$$ for a Banksy original when you can buy a picasso for the same amount of money). That is just my observation about Denning. I would love to own several of the pieces I have seen on this forum. However, something inside wont let me rationalize the price. I suggest we have Harveyn repost his sale ad since we took it over and leave it at that.

I'm a HUGE Denning fan (I don't mean I'm overweight before Top say's anything) and I find it hard to justify the prices that Guy's work is going for. But then again I cannot think of a SINGLE artist that gets discussed on this forum whose work I look at and think "that is absolutely worth EVERY single penny being charged. I thought Banksy was overpriced when I paid ยฃ100 for a signed sheet of Di-faced Tenners, and I've agonised over every one of the Denning canvasses I've taken the plunge on. The whole market is hard to justify. There are a lot of artists that I don't like at all, personally I choose not to publicise my views if I don't like someones work, mainly because if they get off their arses to make some art then who am I to deride it....especially if others do like it. To me it just seems to show arrogance, a part of my character I try hard to keep in check.
