Jose Parla ๐บ๐ธ New Paintings โข Exhibition News โข For Sale, by EHC on Mar 9, 2009 18:31:36 GMT 1, I wonder how much shipping would be for a piece this big. I'm guessing a pretty decent amount. maybe a couple grand if overseas. It is 4ft tall and 7-8 ft long after all.

I think the chances of that happening twice are pretty slim

51k including premium. So Calder and Parla are the two smashing high limits, draw your own conclusions on that one. One could acquire Cornell, deKooning, Gottlieb, Harring, Basquiat, Warhol and others for less in this same auction.

did i say that? I'm not sure when but if one had asked me the same today I would have guessed much less. It's difficult trying to keep up with the moving prices for sure. However, it's time for me to round out my collection and hope somthing nice is offered in my range from Dubuffet in May. Hell, looking at these results, if art continues on this path there are a lot of artists that were forever out of my reach that may be quickly falling back to earth price wise.

Yep. Same here. Looking to trade some of my signed Banksys for a Lucian Freud portrait meself soon.

Good for you, not sure about their markets but all the artists that I want to buy seem to be going higher and higher. Yesterday at PDP a small Pettibon went for about 30k, a rad Doug Aitken photo went nuts. Really good work was selling strong really weak stuff unsold. But if I lived in an auction house I don't think I'd have any clue that we're in the worst bind since the great depression. Didn't look close at todays results but strong lots seemed to sell ok today. But looked like lot of the lots were minor works though so I'm not surprised if some of them were bought in.

Jose Parla ๐บ๐ธ New Paintings โข Exhibition News โข For Sale, by snausages on Mar 10, 2009 19:58:12 GMT 1, Congrats to whoever guessed this would go for 50k. I'm just curious to see which galleries inventory list this will appear in. Or which street art fan mortgaged their home to buy it. Whoever it is they weren't the same people that bought anything else in this auction.
As per the earlier discussion, don't underestimate the power of the internet, forums and the recent collecting mania on influencing buying decisions of the new rich who want to feel cool and in touch. Parla might be here to stay, but don't count on it because of one auction, and don't set your hopes too high even if he does 'stay.' It's a pretty small market and can get tweaked due to unchecked emotions and manipulated rather easily. This goes for art in general not just Parla or street art.
I'd love to see someone do a study of Banksy and the street art market "epidemic" from a 'Tipping Point' point of view: It's that ideas and behavior and messages and products sometimes behave just like outbreaks of infectious disease.

Wow, not sure where you're looking Snausages. I'm getting offers by the day that are more and more enticing. let's face it, this auction was below average work for most of the artists contained within it and hardly a barometer for the market as a whole.
>>>Yesterday at PDP a small Pettibon went for about 30k<<
And he did well today and had one or two bought in. Pettibon is everywhere and if you're having trouble sourcing that particular artist, then i don't know what to say. imho, auction is BY FAR the best way to purchase his work at the moment.
>>>Really good work was selling strong really weak stuff unsold<<<
Agree wholehearteldly but at prices that in most cases are off at least 50% compared with similar pieces last May.

Pettibon isn't hard to find but my point is that people with money aren't shy about shelling out if a particular peace catches their eye. Not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if a record was set yesterday for a Pettibon work of that size. Same with Aitken, great photo and that may have been a record price for a single photo by him. This in the midst of financial crisis.
Personally I'm not interested in buying weak or minor work, I'd rather save and buy a premium lot ...but I'm finding the competition is as stiff as ever for what I'm watching. As I mentioned, Dan Colen, had 2 paintings sell for way over estimates last month (probably a record for him at that size) and sold well at the armory. And sure, a number of places have works by artists I'd like to buy and may be very negotiable ...but the best works are long gone and sell immediately it seems despite all this.

What's shocking is seeing auction records set for contemporary artists despite the worst financial crisis since the great depression. Not the bargain hunting I had hoped for but whatever.

Jose Parla ๐บ๐ธ New Paintings โข Exhibition News โข For Sale, by Francis on Mar 11, 2009 7:46:21 GMT 1, As for the piece at Sotheby's, i think it will sell for between $50k and $75k USD, which by the time you add the 20%, plus the VAT on the 20%, could push it around the $100k mark.
Now that I know how much of a price premium he puts on pieces, I think I'm going to offer 50% on pieces I've had my eyes on at Urban Angel.
