I could not disagree more. Who the f wants a portrait of a politician on the wall? I don't know Obama, I don't care about him and I certainly don't want to see him while I'm eating dinner! ;D
However, this print deserves a little attention imo. After the shyte he's been pumping out every fortnight for the past 6 months, this image is actually a little aesthetically pleasing. It's not a classic imo, but it's a decent image which is a breath of fresh air. I still won't bother trying to get it though, with his site being turd to buy from at release time and the shipping fee to England at $80 last I heard. Good luck to all who care enough to try though.

Fair cop guv! I now feel appropriately foolish! Whilst I DO understand the appeal of the Obama prints to a degree, I am not someone who'd want to hang it at home. Yes, I can think of a few different reasons others might feel differently. Personally I'm not into it at all.
I think that this new print image was worth a mention. I'm sure there will be many more loyal Obey fans than I, who will be pleased to see a marked improvement in the image they get for their $35.

And what is the extra dig on 'an American one'?

I think there's a huge difference with the message and humor of Turf War and Hope. I think there's also a vast difference with Warhols image of Nixon with the message vote Mcgovern and the image of communist Mao being turned into a capitalist print. These are two different worlds in my opinion.
Fairey's prints of Hope to me reek of bandwagonism and sucking up to politicans. I truly and honestly fear this godlike idolization of Obama is unhealthy. If you like Obama great, vote for him, fine, but I tell you what, do not trust him, do not blindly follow this guy, do not idolize this guy. Its dangerous and he deserves as much scrutiny as Bush or anyone and I fear and see too many people letting him slide because of this zombie like allegiance to him that these prints are reinforcing.

Thats why im sitting at work at 7 telling you all this instead of chillin at home with my ferrari ha ha.

Finally the first GOOD Obey print of 08, by snausages on Jul 13, 2008 7:11:11 GMT 1, But clever? how? There's nothing clever about the Hope print. And I'm not talking about the money spinners I'm talking about the hordes of idiots who are voting for obama because it's the cool thing to do and all the liberals who can feel good about themselves by voting for a minority person but who don't scrutinize and criticize him a fraction they do others.
Vote for him if you must but do not give Obama a free ride. I implore you. Question authority, even when packaged in a liberal suit.

I don't find the Hope print interesting or stimulating in the slightest! I think it's crap! (like all the other prints he's released this year so far )

I think Obama, at his best, may transcend the idea that dark-skinned people have to all be lock-step with a certain ideology. Perhaps he will even usher in a future when black Republicans won't be considered so unusual(which is funny considering the old Southern alignment of the parties).
I for one will welcome the day when the racial lines in American politics aren't so painfully clear. Black = Democrat really helps neither.
BTW, just as a note of clarification, I do not really like Obama but I actively dislike McCain. I'd be much more excited by someone like Chuck Hagel.

Finally the first GOOD Obey print of 08, by melmoth on Jul 13, 2008 17:33:55 GMT 1, I think that the bloom is off the Obama rose a little to be honest. Some of the positions that he has taken recently are in line with a more standard politician than the progressive that he claimed himself to be earlier on. For example, his vote of FISA had the progressives in an uproar.
Having said that though, McCain is a HORRIBLE candidate. I think a lot of people were expecting to be the 'maverick' who they remember from the 2000 campaign against Bush. However, that McCain is long gone. He had a terrible week this week - his top economic advisor said that the US were a 'nation of whiners', he called Social Security a 'disgrace', he forgot votes on Viagra and birth control (!), the Iraqis have asked for a troop withdraw timetable, etc. But the press have bearly touched on it. They would rather focus on more minor (at least in my view) issues that Obama has had this week.
There are two possible explanations for this as far as I can see:
1/ The media has an interest in keeping this close from the perspective of ratings. The possibility of an Obama blowout is not something that's going to keep the pundits in a job.
2/ Obama is really the progressive that he says he is, and the corporations who control the media will have less influence in the future. It's in their interest therefore, for McCain to win this election.
Anyway, that's an aside.
I think that this print is a return to form for Obey based on some of the dreck that he's put out this year. For the curious out there, here is the image it's based on:

Finally the first GOOD Obey print of 08, by snausages on Jul 13, 2008 21:16:53 GMT 1, I don't think the print itself is evoking strong opinions from people. It's a pretty straightforward portrait. And I think we'd be talking about Obama regardless of Shepard Fairey. The interesting thing about the prints though is that maybe it exposes the cultlike fascination with Obama with all of the people that have to have it and are paying tons of money to get it and be a part of the club.

Intereseting. I'm not a huuuuge Obey fan, although I've found there are certainly a number of his past prints that I do like. I would never go and buy this latest print myself, but I did feel, as stated, that it was a stronger image and more wall-worthey than recent offerings imo. I genuinely feel it's been a poor 200 for the guy. As more of a lover of his work, what do you make of his image output over the past 6/7 months?
