VERMIN Authentication for Banksy Street Art, by alsbabar on Sept 4, 2008 8:43:21 GMT 1, yes alsbabar, authentication is for the most part irrelevant to me. aginghippie i appreciate the words. the comment was a bit tongue in cheek. i do believe you can do better than 'in the style of...' if the right information is/was available to you. for instance, i have a Faile wheat paste on wood from the street that i bought off a neighborhood artist (Failes studio is right around the corner). i had seen this exact piece in the street and have pictures of it in its original location. i also have pictures of it missing. the wall is now gone entirely, and a new building on its way up. i know we're not talking about Banksy here, but the concept remains the same...loosely. i know it's the real deal. if it wasn't already hanging on my wall and it came up in auction, i would bid confidently regardless of provenance. but again, this is a very specific example...how much it applies to this thread i of course can't exactly say...you see where i'm coming from though at least, yes?
but can you 100% prove to any potential buyer that is a genuine Faile piece? Without the watertight, bombproof, authentication from the artist you have something that is worth nothing!!!

Lyon and Turnbull are a fairly low key operation, who are trying to branch out and tackle the big boys. Unfortunately they can't compete with getting in decent consignments, particularly Banksy, who would make them a big slice of money if they were able to sell his work - so Ben n Graham decide to dream up Vermin to "authenticate" the pieces that Pest control will not.
Clearly what they are hoping is that people will consign pest control authenticated pieces on the back of the publicity the vermin statement has created. Surely no-one in their right mind is going to purchase something with this false authentication attached? Then again greed has a way of clouding peoples judgement so I am sure that they will. I just hope that Pest control take them to court, I think that they probably would have grounds to.

Needless to say Vermin have nothing to do with PCO or Banksy.It seems inconceivable that you can just create your own authentication board that has no contact whatsoever with the LIVING artist.
PCO have spent the past 8 months building a data base and cataloging the artists' body of work. We hold the only existing records of commercial sale and have the only comprehensive library of photographs of each of his images dating back to inception.
We cross reference every piece that is sent through to us from every auction house, dealer and collector all over the world.
We show each piece that does not cross reference to the Artist who can tell instantly if a work is authentic or not.
We do not authenticate street pieces due to the fact that Banksy believes his street work should remain on the street for everyone to enjoy and that once it is removed from it's original situation then it is no longer a work of art.
In addition, it is well known that you can buy a large selection of Banksy stencils on ebay for ยฃ2.99. We have found that the majority of street pieces, especially ones on street furniture are in fact fakes.
Since we set up Pest Control 8 months ago we have come across 89 fake street pieces and have pulled 62 fake Banksy works from circulation along with 137 fake Banksy prints, these have all been determined by the Artist himself.
The majority of these pieces have been pulled from auction houses and reputable galleries where trained 'experts' are hired to consign such works.
It is absolutely ridiculous that a panel of unknown, so called "experts", can offer the same service that PCO do.
As always in the secondary market "Buyer Beware".

Probably a quick way to sell these lots at auction and then get shut down via due process. Only a fool would buy these lots if they think there is much financial upside. If you want the image, great, but know that long term these will be viewed price wise just like forged works and that is at a STEEP discount to anything authenticated.

I can see where you are coming. Provided the artist acknowledges that they created the piece (photos in books are best) and that you can establish a documented chain between the piece in situ and the piece on your wall you don't need certification.
Provenance is relative. People need differing degrees of comfort and you are happy from your research that it's real, for others though it may not be enough since there is no solid link to the artist - just a high probability. At current prices that may be enough but in the future as prices rise it probably won't be.
In the case of Banksy I doubt those street pieces are going to be cheap so the comfort level needs to be high and, frankly, with Vermin it isn't. I wonder what Vermin's indemnity insurance is like...

agreed...comfort needs to be high and surely isn't with these monkeys. and like other people have touched upon, it looks like Vermin will be defunct very shortly. would have been funny being a fly on the wall for their meeting with their lawyers (and any brainstorming activities for that matter). seems like their excitement got the best of them, but hey, maybe they'll try and actually pull it off...

Lyon and Turnbull are a fairly low key operation, who are trying to branch out and tackle the big boys. Unfortunately they can't compete with getting in decent consignments, particularly Banksy, who would make them a big slice of money if they were able to sell his work - so Ben n Graham decide to dream up Vermin to "authenticate" the pieces that Pest control will not. Clearly what they are hoping is that people will consign pest control authenticated pieces on the back of the publicity the vermin statement has created. Surely no-one in their right mind is going to purchase something with this false authentication attached? Then again greed has a way of clouding peoples judgement so I am sure that they will. I just hope that Pest control take them to court, I think that they probably would have grounds to.

You can't sue someone for their opinion in this country. Maybe in some communist states you can but not here.
Get over the fact that Pest Control have left the door wide open to this purely as a result of their own inception.
The only resolution would be for Pest Control to start authenticating authentic pieces! Be they prints or 'street' pieces. (They choose not to)
