Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by LEVI C on Nov 16, 2008 10:47:16 GMT 1, Hello forum,
I couldn't resist it. I was round my mates last week and took a snap of his Banksy. With his permission I thought I'd stick it on for the forum. I was going to post it in 'your framed art' but its only photo's there with no text. It is available for sale so here is more appropriate.
Obviously, any questions and enquiries have to be ran by him so PM me and i'll get back to you.
I predict a few obvious questions so here are some details to clear them up.
- Yes the piece with in the Dreweatts urban art auction in June
- It's damn early, it was from the 98 Easton Exhibition (possibly before he was using stencils) and has clealry inluenced much of his more recent work of artists doing portraits/graff etc.
- he obviously has full providence
- he's the second owner
Please only contact if you interest is genuine.
Peronsally, I think this piece its the absolute daddy of Banksy's. The sketch of this piece has always remained on his site (just checked and it still is!) and i think its the only one thats never been taken down and he's never had the original on their or in any of his books. The only pic ever published before the Auction was in 'Banksy's Bristol', a photo from the orignal exhibition.
Anyway, wish she was mine, at least I get to have some beers with her from time to time.
Cheers all

Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by craigf on Nov 16, 2008 10:58:44 GMT 1, I like this piece for being different from the stencil pieces. I also like it being a "complete canvas" in that the whole area is an intrinsic part of the piece I think my favourite early Banksy original is the Shark / Goldfish / Trolly one which is similarly v different from most of the pieces ppl associate with Banksy

Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by HowAboutNo on Nov 16, 2008 11:14:26 GMT 1, Just my own opinion, but bought (and undersold, as in should have gone for a lot more) at Dreweatts, and selling it now? I think your mate is mad, he's likely to make a loss if anything selling now. But good luck to him, is one of my fave originals.

Sorry I should have said he is the owner that put it through Dreweatts and yes it should have gone for alot more, so he didn't sell it ;D

Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by stender on Nov 16, 2008 16:04:21 GMT 1, I was offered a piece a while back from someone who said he was given the piece about 10 yesrs ago when his company shared a studio with banksy. I wasn't that convinced it was banksy and told him to goto pest control. Having seen that piece though I can see the similarities.
What do you think?

Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by Deleted on Nov 16, 2008 16:07:35 GMT 1, that's a fun piece! it looks a bit loose for banksy, but when it's that old.... I don't dare to say it's genuine or not, but I'm not an expert really..

Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by LEVI C on Nov 16, 2008 17:47:35 GMT 1, I think that's really interesting Stender. If its real I rek that could be the earliest piece there is! I like the look of the 'B', being in the same style as his later B but he would have to have had a break in between as the school kids crossing I think is his earliest recorded signature yet (oh god hold on i'll dig it out) and obviously before his main one, as this was his first stencil after the Ant (i think)
Also the angle, shape and look of the head does resemble some of the early stick men he did. Like the really early one being chased by coppers on Bridwell police station. Didn't have teeth but I think it had similar round eyes. (don't have that pic and can't be bother to find it).
Anyway......arrrgghh i guess we'll never know unless we see it come up in auction or the owner sees this and comes on (please do if you read this!).
I know someone that knows him well enough to ask, so will try and get some closure on this.
Well interesting cheers!

Banksy - Early Unique - Portrait of an Artist, by stender on Nov 16, 2008 19:45:35 GMT 1, I'm in email contact with the owner. He says he's asked pest control for authentication but they are taking their time.
