BAST BLACK ON EBAY ALREADY, by kel on Dec 13, 2008 2:29:45 GMT 1, I had the No 8 in my basket of the black version but could not pull the trigger. I thought the white version was a stronger image. oh and with the extra ยฃ300 a bought a Vhils.
Though really I should have spent my money on an Eine so I could learn how to spell.
How EXCITING.

BAST BLACK ON EBAY ALREADY, by dynamixx on Dec 13, 2008 14:29:14 GMT 1, not just you And me - what's it all about? Fourthed, genuinely don't understand the appeal at all. Take a cartoon character, add twenty eyes/a gun/bits of a phonebook/some other found advert (delete as appropriate), and what are you left with? What's the message here? Genuinely don't see any humour or artistic merit. And I've seen Popeye at least in the flesh.

What's the message here?
The obvious answer is who cares? Art doesn't need to have a message.
However, Bast's stuff does indeed have one. The same tired message as everyone else in the 'scene'.
It's a comment on consumerism and the pervasiveness of pop culture. Hence his use of same tired figures as everyone else.
The big difference is that he uses these cliches in different ways. Ways that confuse those more used to art that works on the same level as a T-shirt slogan.

BAST BLACK ON EBAY ALREADY, by iwouldfollow youanywhere on Dec 13, 2008 15:46:04 GMT 1, if you don't 'get' BAST without being told why it's good then you will never get him.
which is a shame for you, but good for me as it means less competition.

BAST BLACK ON EBAY ALREADY, by dynamixx on Dec 13, 2008 20:02:07 GMT 1, As for me I don't get it when people want to get things which they don't get Fair play, for me 'getting' art which baffles at first is pretty illuminating. Not here to take the pi$$, genuinely wanted to hear other peeps' interpretations.
I've read enough books and had to write about enough different artists/movements over the years to know that a lot of art that I would've dismissed on a purely visual level becomes much more appealing when its context and meaning are unveiled. Isn't that the fun of most 20th century onwards abstract/ conceptual art?
As for Bast, I understand the tired pop-culture references, and at a push an implicit satire on consumerism/ celebrity culture. Still don't understand his appeal though. But whatever tickles your pickle, if we all liked the same thing the world would be a pretty boring place.
