Micallef, by pezlow on Mar 10, 2008 11:18:08 GMT 1, Good point made by Afroken about the number of investors now outstripping the number of genuine collectors. There do seem to be more people buying for speculative reasons than there are for traditional reasons (i.e. get something on the wall, treasure it, if it goes up in value then that is a unexpected added extra).
This forum has become like a giant online yard sale for art, with Dface being the poster boy for a new generation of investors/speculators etc.
The only thing that a collector can do is continue to plough their own furrow and try not to follow the sheep. If you have been enjoying Dface and collecting it for some time (like for example photoxtc or biggayal etc then keep doing it). If other things float your boat then even better.
I guess I am pretty lucky that the artists I like best in the scene, apart from Mr B, are not subject to the incredible hype that Dface and Walker have had, or Micallef before then. Even faile seemed to have avoided it to a point, although prices have gradually risen which means that I need to be very selective about buying any of their work. But other artists I like - Swoon, Eine, Chris Stain etc etc barely seem to get a mention comparatively. I'm just going to enjoy that for as long as it lasts, hopefully forever.

Micallef, by Coach on Mar 10, 2008 11:31:31 GMT 1, agreed pezlow, but this forum for me is also about learning of artists that might otherwise pass me by. there are some artists mentioned on this forum that don't do it for me, so i don't buy. other artists i have known about for ages cos of my own research, eg blek. but without this forum i wouldnt for example have heard of miss bugs, an artist that i rate very highly.

Micallef, by carlito on Mar 10, 2008 12:49:11 GMT 1, think that's pretty harsh about Dface in all honesty, he does some lovely work, yes recent auction results have led to a jump in prices and people off loading/ buying more than before, but that's the nature of the beast especially on here...10 months or so ago it would have been just as easy to say the same things about Micallef when a JD was sold 2k+ ....investors buying and selling is nothing new its just more an idictment of how this forum seems to work to my mind
