Banksy โข The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by gbh on Oct 11, 2008 0:22:26 GMT 1, I can't believe no one has mentioned how the cat in the front windows is pretty much a live animatronic version of barcode....... I didn't get that vibe from this piece really (from seeing the video). Imo Barcode was about capitalism and it's predatory nature. Thought of the similarity crossed my mind for a moment, but when the camera angled round to show the animal for what it was, some faux-fur with a red silk/satin lining, the strongest feeling I got from it was, an animal, in particular a large predator, ceases by it's very nature to continue being what it is we're interested in seeing, if we cage it up to gaze at for our own ammusement. Whereas the tweetybird is aged, miserable and unhealthy and I took that as more of a direct message of cruelty and unfairness, I felt the leopard piece was more a demonstration of the question "how much are we willing to change/compromise the true nature of animals, in order that we may be able to view them as spectacles in a zoo?" (Is a leoprd that doesn't hunt still a predator, or just a beautiful animal hyde which has been robbed of it's life/spirit?) The rabbit piece was more of a fur-related message imo. Admitedly the one or two videos I was less keen on have also been growing on me since reading what people have said about seeing them in the flesh, especially the monkey piece which isn't fully viewable in the video.
perhaps more of a progression of an earlier theme then.......

Banksy โข The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 11, 2008 6:04:29 GMT 1, The show is so well placed and thought about - there are so many pet shops in Manhattan - especially around that area....I came to the conclusion it's because most people there don't have kids and cradling a minature dog is...easier. I'm glad that he has chosen the plight of animals - and so what about Jamie Oliver...I think Hugh Fernley did braver stuff - anyway, anything to raise the issue is good stuff I love the poor little vivisection bunny wunny....the way she turns her head and blinks at you The Monkey being how far the evolution of a man's brain has got (most evenings in on their own (tho, alas - sometimes when their ladies have retired early)) The caged leopard coat - wearing of fur and caging wild animals - meeeowww to all Don't get the CCTV nest - tho I realise they are a bit of a trade mark The barking sausages? - Dog meat is an Eastern thing surely? tho i get the hot dog pun. Swimming Fish Fingers ?? - what does that portray? - can only think of over fishing in seas? But then... Maybe some don't have double meanings - he just did it because he wanted to?
that everyone's eating and feeding their children processed foods perhaps? Full of unhealthy additives and bearing no resemblance to the pieces of fish or chicken from which they are allegedly made..?? Maybe not, but it's what came to mind for me anyway. This would be in keeping with an overall theme of our relationship with animals, by addressing another instance of what we do with them after killing them. Meats seem to be a focus.

Banksy โข The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by Heavyconsumer on Oct 11, 2008 6:08:14 GMT 1, I like the Cauty releases even if they are a bit unoriginal. www.jcautyandson.com/acatalog/PLATINUM_DELUXE_EDITIONS.html I don't consider them "must haves" though and wouldn't have anywhere to put them up. I've quite a lot needing frames as it is! Local framers have not been up to par so far, hopefully tomorrows investigations will yield more fruit!

Banksy Sets Up Shop In Big Apple
8:16pm UK, Friday October 10, 2008 Leah Borromeo, in New York Banksy, the Scarlet Pimpernel of the art world, is in New York. Or was.
Whoever Banksy may be, he's opened the Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill in New York's West Village. It features animatronics developed by "some Hollywoodish company". Set in a shopfront that Sweeney Todd would own if he were into animals, a rabbit paints its nails and chicken nuggets feed from a dish of sauce. Fish fingers swim in a bowl, hot dogs burrow and frolic in terrariums, CCTV cameras look after their young, and a bald, caged, suicidal-looking Tweety swings back and forth in his cage. Banksy is no stranger to installations. In 2005 in London's Notting Hill, he filled a shopfront with live rats and his painted reworkings of the sort of thing you would see in the National Gallery and called it Crude Oils. The difference here is that nothing is for sale. Nothing is signed, nothing is commodified. The actors manning the shop play every bit the New York pet shop owner.

Why? He's speaking out against things many non "veges" disagree with too.
The plight of animals is also important to many meat eaters. I eat meat every day but still am aware of and against of animal mistreatment.

Banksy โข The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by worlddomination on Oct 11, 2008 19:18:23 GMT 1, Bristol graffiti artist Banksy has opened his first exhibtion in New York.
He has set up a fake pet supply shop, complete with large furry animals, rhesus monkeys and rabbits, in Manhattan.
But the would-be creatures are all fakes created by the artist who aimed to question "our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming" in his work at The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill.
"New Yorkers don't care about art, they care about pets," he said. "So I'm exhibiting them instead."
His exhibition, which contains no paintings or graffiti, features a robot monkey wearing headphones and watching television in a cage, a fake-rabbit wearing a pearl necklace, and chicken nuggets with legs, busily dipping themselves in sauce.
"I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing," Banksy said.
"There have been complaints from people unhappy about seeing two hot dogs performing a sex act whilst on their way into work. But it's no more unnatural than the process behind making a sausage in the first place."
Referring to painting a live Indian elephant in a Los Angeles exhibition, he added: "I took all the money I made exploiting an animal in my last show and used it to fund a new show about the exploitation of animals."
The New York Times said today: "Banksy's statements, like much of his pranksterish oeuvre, should be taken with a grain of salt.
"But there's no denying the show's attention to comically pointed detail."
