I'm heading towards the latter. Those who have said Banksy will be regarded as kitsch in years to come will certainly be pleased.
What I think is undeniable though is that the whole thing - the store, the rats - is a masterstroke in how to properly execute a campaign. The excitement that has surrounded this along with the publicity it will generate is incredible.
As commented elsewhere, it's also of note that there were no leaks ahead of the opening. I just can't see how they manage to keep something like this successfully under wraps.
As for works on sale - maybe there will be no offerings in 2008. I'm yet to buy a Banksy print and would absolutely love one, but the pleasure from seeing such innovative schemes such as this somehow make the idea of ownership irrelevant.
Banksy, long may you continue to do what you do.

I always thought that the Palestinian wall work was the tops and would continually be a real bastard to live up to with future work. But this is a good move forward - well done banksy-bloke. He's obviously not strapped for cash and so he uses it to produce work that can't be sold. If you've made enough moolah what's to do but start spreading the love for free... ace.
