Banksy • The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by raiden on Oct 9, 2008 14:54:51 GMT 1, Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but this show is one of his weakest. Yes the art is fantastic, but you've seen it all on the internet in the videos. I went down 2hrs ago, no one in line. 20 minutes ago, no one in line. There is none of the palpable anticipation of normal art openings.
Its small. Very small. I like the concept, but it probably isn't worth flying out to get to. Its nothing in scope like the LA show, but points for the intricacy and attention to detail - and is a cool concept. It looks like a real (albeit twisted) pet store.
The guy at the counter is a quirky detail. I'm a bit let down to be honest - I expected more, much more from a Banksy opening - in terms of overall excitement, etc. but I can't pan it at all from an execution standpoint.
Put it this way... I brought my gf who was not exposed to Banksy before, and she was like "That's it. I don't see what the big deal about this guy is." If I brought her to the LA show, there is no way she would have said the same thing.
That's a bit of a result of his success. He can do whatever he wants... and this "fake pet store" was a really, really fun idea to temper down things. I mean, you can't top yourself everytime... It makes me wonder if this isn't a wind up to some bigger warehouse gallery thing - which I have to think could be the case given how underwhelming in size this show is.
I heard from a reporter who went in, that you can see almost everything from the street, i.e. 80% of the work. Its really just a shallow storefront with all the pieces you see in the video and not much else - though the pieces in the video are brilliant, especially the bunny. The nuggets look really cool in person. Your call if that's worth a 500 quid plane ticket... I would say enjoy the videos instead and the money is better spent on other things - and I'm a Banksy fanatic who woke up early for this.

How does Bongo Know everything....... His silence for the last 36 hours indicates to me that soon after that post - he was on a plane flying over the Atlantic

Banksy • The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by lee3 on Oct 9, 2008 16:55:24 GMT 1, So, I'm either reading too much into this, throwing myself a nice curve ball sitting here, or doing a decent job playing detective. the pet store runs until 10.31 with supposedly nothing for sale. Looking at the rat on the left below i'm guessing that when that mural is finished it will read Saturday, November 1st at 8pm. Perhaps that is when a wharehouse show kicks off?

Banksy • The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by raiden on Oct 9, 2008 17:06:23 GMT 1, Okay, so you know, after going in, its fun. Its not worth the trip across the pond, or across the country - even for Banksy fanatics as there just isn't enough there - but totally worth checking out if you can, and if you're in NY, Banksy fan or not, I recommend it as its trippy and one of the cooler art installations I've seen.
Its really, really small - but detailed. The meats in terrariums was really fun.
Overall, its a brilliant commentary on urban art. It takes a storefront, a pet store what is more, in the most urban locale, fills it with animals (beasts of the wild) and then reflects their oddly urban life. From the tweety bird who looks miserable and has had its feathers fall out, to the chameleons who took on the colours of the street signs in their cage, to the strange way NY shops tend to pair weird things right next to each other in the name of commerce (deli meats and aquarium goods), to the bizarre way we take animals and urbanize them into things they are not ... down to nuggets dipping themselves.
I may write a more eloquent post later. But besides two Britts who were in at the same time as me, no one was in there 5 minutes after it opened. It was strange. Altogether odd scene.
For Britts who can't make the trip (and let me say, its small enough to be underwhelming) all of the art in the show has been shown online to my knowledge. If you're flush with cash and have to see it, go for it, but save your money for Santa's Ghetto if not.
My favorite, however, is the monkey wearing headphones and watching ape's fucking on Discovery channel as he plays with his wanker while sitting in a cage with discarded pizza etc. - beautiful commentary on man's urban existence.
Funny enough, the only hanging art was crappy looking posters of wildlife that you'd expect to see in a dumpy pet store. Quite cheeky of Banksy, as you go up to look at these crappy posters thinking, there has to be something more, and nope, they're crappy art (at least I think, I'm going to go back tomorrow to give it another look)
All in all, its really less an art show, than an example of elaborate art direction and set design. I could have easily imagined what I saw out of a Tim Burton movie - not to take away from Banksy, as its a testament to his creative versatility that he did something this offbeat and different.
The only take away were business cards reading "The Village Pet Store And Grill" with a photographic picture of a monkey behind bars on the back saying "I hate Mondays." I picked up three of them as souvenirs.
I did get another lead I'm examining and will get back to the forum on shortly.
