Banksy street pieces on Gumtree, by ratboy on Jan 8, 2009 15:52:42 GMT 1, Just noticed a couple of street pieces being touted on Gumtree - one of which is the pap rat from Embankment. I can remember a few photos of this from the forum so should be easy enough to tell if it's real or not:
www.gumtree.com/london/35/32911035.html
And the other:

Banksy street pieces on Gumtree, by rrrich on Jan 8, 2009 21:10:54 GMT 1, i thought the gas box was up on ebay a few months ago, didnt go for too much and it was the verdict here that it was authentic. seems strange that it's now up on gumtree.
love to know how the guy managed to get a whole telephone exchange box away without drawing any attention too!

Banksy street pieces on Gumtree, by ratboy on Jan 9, 2009 11:31:02 GMT 1, I spoke to the guy on the phone and he says the box was bought from a second hand shop in Brick Lane just under a year ago.
I'd say it looks like a very good match to the photos, but his story seemed questionable.

Sorry i know you wanted to prove they were real but why post more pics of them in situ, IMO all you are doing is giving the seller more provenance and thus helping the sale of these STOLEN street pieces.

Yes, apt that the t**t that's selling them went out and bought Martins book.
A lot of people unfortunately use that as provenance, bit unavoidable really.

Do you honestly believe someone is going to buy that stuff? It's horrible and near worthless given that PC would never authenticate it. IMO, there is more value salvaging that piece as scrap metal.

And anyone who believes that a huge, weathered, heavy, steel box will look nice in their home or appreciate over time is sadly mistaken. Is there anyone here that thinks "hmm, what a beauty, now THIS is the Banksy I've been searching for". I believe this is the exception to the one man's trash is another man's treasure rule as I can't see any sane person cherishing that ugly metal box. i'm laughing on the inside as i continue to type. this is hilarious.
Ok, ok, MAYBE if you proposed to your wife next to that thing for some strange reason or that box was the only thing in the way between an out of control car and your certain demise could i appreciate someone sharing a sentimental love for it. Even then, it can't be worth more than 4 or 5 dollars, right?

Haha..this made me smile because,as I said in an earlier post, this is the first Banksy I ever saw and so could be described as the piece that started my interest in his work. Therefore,I guess it does hold a bit of sentiment.....however.....Would I ever consider owning a stolen street piece?......Not a chance.

Banksy street pieces on Gumtree, by thesewalls on Jan 10, 2009 13:22:05 GMT 1, for starters, lee, grantb was being facetious...i'll take any reason to get you going though i always love what you have to say.
gurn, i'm glad you chimed in to start the painting of the following picture...you grew up around the corner from the box. walked by it every day. remembered the moment you noticed the new Banksy tag. remembered the day someone yoinked it. love street art, have a sense of humor about the current state of affairs, yada yada yada. i'm NOT saying this is worth anywhere near it's price tag, but a super duty lock box isn't cheap. could be perfect in some trendy restaurant/coffee shop/clothing store/whatever, and would of course double as a table and secure storage unit. just a thought.
haha just noticed your signature gurn...if you would never consider owning a stolen street piece, you're not much of a tiger are you!

Banksy street pieces on Gumtree, by snausages on Jan 10, 2009 15:46:28 GMT 1, Were these items originally property of the city or government? If not how do you know they were stolen? The owner might have very well sold it on himself or might have very well been paid by someone to take it. And if it was actually stolen from the govt. I'm surprised how many people here have such a national & local pride that they refuse to own anything ever stolen from the government or their municipality. ...sheesh, we're not much in the way of true rebels or vandals here, are we?

Banksy street pieces on Gumtree, by andrewd on Jan 10, 2009 15:58:02 GMT 1, The box provided electricity for an ( boat ) unused mooring. Probably the property of the PLA ( port of London Authority ) or the City of London. Many a padlock was broken off the box and one attempt to cut it open resulted in the cut to the top left of the rat. The broken blade was left insitu. The rat was marked with a silver pen by probably by the same person who defaced the umberella rat on Leonard Street. It eventually removed in it's entireity leaving a whole pile of live electrical leads sitting on a relatively busy footpath. Classy. Pity as I rather liked that rat.

just to be clear where i said stolen street pieces i was not referring to the actual boxes themselves (which i couldn't give a toss about) i was referring to the Banksy pieces attached to them that were there for every one to enjoy and not to be flogged on Gumtree. For me this shows why pest control are right in not authenticating this kind of shit.

But I can understand why PC won't authenticate it. For that would of course open Banksy up to criminal prosecution for defacing public property.
