Banksy provenance, by baldwin on Aug 26, 2007 20:16:08 GMT 1, I don't think I could live with something like that without ever knowing. At the end of the day, it's real or it isn't and there is somebody out there that knows. So I personally wouldn't stop until I found out. It would annoy me too much that there was an answer out there in the big wide world. ;D
And it has nothing to do with value (ok, maybe a little), it would mainly be for my sanity.

It's not "not brilliant".. it's shit ;D but if it's genuine and secured provenance, then I imagine those prices could be attained by a half decent gallery.

Very very doubtful, probably zero chance. Though I guess it was a test piece and not knicked off the street so you never know. Doubt he'd ever want asnything to do with it. It's not very good is it. But maybe Haddocks letter is ok for a less reputable gallery... safets thing to do would be to insure it for 20k..
*and then burn it ;D

in a word.. no
nuart makes a fair point that with laz prov a gallery could get some gullible banker to part with a large sum for it.. but it would be a case of a fool and his money being easily parted..
a case of "take a loook at mah baanksy, yah"

Banksy provenance, by baldwin on Aug 26, 2007 20:32:00 GMT 1, I don't think it's shit. There's a strong possibility that it's an original banksy.
If I were to buy something like that, it wouldn't be for the artistic value, it would be for the magic of having a banksy stencil on my wall. Personally, I would love it. People don't buy bits of Wembely grass beause it looks nice, it's because of what it represents.

It's a nice little placard rat saying nothing.. maybe that's why it's on the TV hey. These have context on the street, and the screenprints are buying into a little piece of that message. A test spray on the side of a mates TV. Well, i'm just not sure.. but as a manic Banksy Fan, i'd happily frame it up and stick it on the wall if I'd pleased myself ( rather than everyone else) that it was genuine.

That's what I told ollie - To me, it has value because I could probably convince myself it's genuine.

but if it did then you would happily put this rather shabby effort on your wall based solely on the fact that banksy did it?

It would depend on my situation - If I could just about afford 20K with loans and credit cards then I wouldn't. If i was a multi millionaire, then I would probably would, just for the sake of having it.

if I was a multimillionaire then I doubt would get rich buying things 'for the sake of it'
I would spend 40k and get a decent GWB double canvas or something which actually had some aesthetic appeal..
