micallef prints, by Deleted on Sept 17, 2007 23:24:36 GMT 1, I think it's maybe a bit more basic.. substitute those beer bellied jumping blokes for mouse faced tennage girls and 99% of the board would be falling over themselves to get one. Quite funny I think.. great point Nu...I actually prefer these to the 'twee' previous images...but hey think I'm on my own with that opinion
nice to see a man in touch with his feminine side and not afraid to admit it.

I think they're great, always been partial to the Minotaur ! If the scale of the orignals are very large, they'll be sooo incredibly imposing and a lot of people will change their minds about the prints IMO

micallef prints, by reznyce on Sept 18, 2007 2:02:08 GMT 1, I also think they're pretty bad. But I think they will sell out quickly anyway. Laz will make sure of that. After all, he sold a many of Paul Insect cow heads, which imo were pretty bad. I like Micallef's work a lot, but it seems like many other artists, he's fallen into the let's make a quick buck trap. I bet Laz told him to throw some guns in there to make sure the shit sells. I think I will spend my 1200 pounds on a Kelsey Brookes original instead.

micallef prints, by endtimes on Sept 18, 2007 3:38:48 GMT 1, Dissention in the ranks!
Interesting to see all the hate pushed over on these prints. I don't think they're his best prints ever but the only prints I like more than these are the Laz prints that were 4k and are now 6-8k such as we come in peace etc. But I think all the new ones are kind of nice. I'd take any of these over Friendly Fire or Judgement Day or many others and they will be less money compared to ebay. The huge size of the editions is a catch-22 though. More people will get them but it's a bit less desirable because...
That said I'm still debating about dropping over 2000 dollars on one. hmmm....

micallef prints, by Adamski on Sept 18, 2007 8:40:59 GMT 1, I've been reading these Micallef posts and agree with some of the comments made here, although I still think the images are powerfull, if not a little derivative of some of his previous prints.
What I struggle with is that people are actually going to go and buy any of these, regardless of what the image is. They are lithos for gods sake.
There is a lot of discussions of giclee Vs screen prints on these forums, and rightly so. You can't ignore that some art needs to be reproduced with giclee, but litho? It's a cheap poster. Buy the book and cut out the pics, frame them and get yourself a series of Micaleffs.
ยฃ1100 for a litho poster? They're taking the p*ss. Anybody who buys one and then comes on here and says "wow, the quality is amazing in the flesh!" is either misguided or under the influence.
Sorry that this was a little off topic, but i'm amazed that they can get away with it.

Another way of looking at it is that Mic has painted a large number of canvasses for the show but that Laz has advised him to release the ones with guns in as prints...

you're thinking of offset lithos... this is a completely different process

micallef prints, by pezlow on Sept 18, 2007 9:24:45 GMT 1, There is no doubt that the lithos will be quality. Having seen some of the other lithos produced by Laz they have all been top quality. The colours you get with a proper (rather than offset) litho production are very very close to the original.
The only inevitable downside with a litho print compared to a screenprint is that the litho print will seem a bit "flat" in comparison and you can't reproduce the texture that comes with the screenprinting process.

everyday's a schoolday, cheers for clearing that up for me.
Please ignore my rant above! ;D
Although, if anyone can post a link with a clear explanation of the difference, it would be appreciated.

Picasso's dictum โGood artists borrow; great artists stealโ
You either like them or you don't. I like the micallefs, particularly peace keeper.

I've been told that they've probably been printed by www.thecurwenstudio.co.uk/ (although this is not known for a fact) one of the few places that do litho by hand rather than machine, and that they may use extra colours in addition to CMYK to get the colour match better, but I'd have thought that they'd be using an aluminum photo plate which will be much of a muchness to the plates that you would put on a machine press.
I've never seen a litho been done by hand apart from when I was at The London College of Printing in the mid 80's and that was done with a litho stone, but I can't remember much about it, it's a very rare technique, which is not often used commercially, more likely to be found at a college or art studio perhaps. You can pretty much assume that litho means offset machine litho 99.9% of the time.
