micallef prints, by verbalkint on Sept 17, 2007 21:12:42 GMT 1, I know this has been well discussed, but i have had a really busy couple of days and have only just seen these prints. I have to say that i am really dissapointed with them, and isnt the peacekeeper one an old image? Or very similar to an old image (i think i might be thinking about his website) I had a really interesting conversation with Adam Neate at his show and he said that he sees Micallef as an illustrator. He wasnt slagging him off, said he liked some of his work, but it is essentially all the same idea and you could go to one of his shows to have a look round and you would essentially be looking at the same picture again and again.
Its hard to comment until the pictures come online from his show, but i dont think he has progressed at all and if they have picked the best, most thought provoking images as lithographs then god help him, because the show will be the biggest dissapointment of the year. Granted, the expectations were high, but those prints leave me cold, he has become a parody of himself.
Sorry if the above opinions echo what has already been said, im just really dissapointed. I was hoping there would be a couple of really amazing stand-out prints, like the editions of 50, or pretty much most of his back catalogue. Im just really dissapointed.
apart from peacekeeper they look like a collaberation between micallef and Ron English

micallef prints, by ricosg11 on Sept 17, 2007 21:23:14 GMT 1, I hope pow release that orig. they had at the ghetto that said all major credit cards accepted with the angel. I thought that was brilliant. Then If they do release it I hope I can snag one for the wall.
to comment on the above. To me the charcoal stuff had emotion, it had soul. You could see it in the brish strokes. This new stuff is just a rehash of the prints that are doing the best on the aftermarket... Well Steve the market can only bare so much. Another thing I havent seen mentioned is that if I had purchased those $8000 lithos form laz a few months back I would be pretty pissed about an almost identical realease for a 1/4 the price.

micallef prints, by sausageboonwee on Sept 17, 2007 21:28:46 GMT 1, It's funny, Adam Neate produced all those amazing prints which blow Micallef's away. Adam Neate took most of the day after his show to sell his (different quantities). How many prints are actually available from Laz on wednesday and when do people reckon they will sell out by?

micallef prints, by Cocteau 101 on Sept 17, 2007 21:32:48 GMT 1, Verbal, I think you've summarised perfectly what a lot of people are currently thinking but maybe don't want to say, either because it goes against the current Micallef trend or they want to buy in the hope of an instant increase in value/chance to flip/swap. All the monetary aspects aside I don't like the images, far too masculine, samey, war driven etc. I'm bored of war driven art. I know it is probably one of the most significant world events of our lifetime but in a media driven age the bombardment of imagery and news negates the power of these images in my opinion. Maybe I'm just not understanding them. Despite all the hype I tend to agree. with you that there seems to be little progression and that they are generally disappointing. I want to see them in the flesh but much prefer things like Head, SMS etc to these. I honestly hope the show is more varied and interesting.
Cheers

micallef prints, by verbalkint on Sept 17, 2007 22:06:04 GMT 1, Just one amazing image, something like dirty delux or 21st century love, a real stand out would have been fantastic, would have kept everyone happy, but the only people i can see buying all 4 prints are die hard completests who have everything and wont stop now, or flippers hoping to turn a profit, but i really dont see demand outstripping supply on these at all. I am in london on wednesday anyway, and i wont be buying any of these.
As for his show in LA, it will be interesting to see his prices, they are bound to be higher than Adam Neates on principle, thats the way steves head works, but it will be really interesting to see if the show is the instant pre preview sell out that everyone thought it would be. Im sure there will be takers, there always are, but if these lithos are anything to go by, if they are charging £50,000+ for a normal size painting which i think is entirely possible, i really dont see that as either a bargain or a wise investment.
After neates show (which was an undisputable success) i though to myself 'the ball is well and truly in your court Mr Micallef, after these prints, he hasnt just hit the net, he failed to hit the ball altogether. If this is what he has been working on for the last year or so, then maybe he was just a one hit wonder? maybe he did a few years good work and will spend the rest of his career desperatly trying to acheive the same highs again (a bit like oasis really)
Or maybe the show will be absolutely amazing

Several interesting and, yes! , worth thinking about points. I can't really compare artists so i won't as it is slightly scewed as everyone is at different stages of their respective development.
Bearing this in mind may i echo what has been said before in this case the images do not blow my socks off - i am sure that everyone is well intentioned... from Laz to those who will queue on wed morning / ( tue eve - dont do it).
SL may simply be providing vent to those who could'nt run to 4k for the others - fair play. As for pow - well the prints from them could be different - who knows... we'll be tuned - those who won't be in the Q...
The subject - i agree is being hammered badly by some artists who are/seem to be losing the message and hence power of their work. The re-iterative nature of the imagery is becoming tiresome and at times patronising - something I'm sure cannot be the objective.
AM has the potential, of this we can be sure , as sure as we are of the others in his league... how this potential is tapped then sold by laz in this case is another matter.
As for the storyitself - well it certainly is generating interest / intrigue and controversy..

micallef prints, by stuey09 on Sept 17, 2007 22:20:26 GMT 1, I've been trying to put into words why I believe that AM's show will be a success, in light of some of the negative messages. In truth it is impossible to guarantee that he will unveil something of Neate's quality and perhaps it is unfair to expect that he will. Neate's show was, as Verbal has rightly alluded to, a spectacular display of work. Show's of that quality are not 10 a penny and so it is unfair to expect work of spectacular quality just because it is Micallef. However, AM is an extremely talented artist and is capable of blowing us away with some inspired work. So I suppose the reason why I reckon the show will be a winner is purely based on faith in his talent as an incredibly good artist. Fingers crossed.

or
Commission a piece from Ian francis for the same money. I know where my money is going

micallef prints, by Coach on Sept 17, 2007 23:07:26 GMT 1, hey verbal, great to see you back. agree with you to a point. disapointed by 3 of these prints, but still think peacekeeper is a great print from what ive seen, and hoping it looks even better in the flesh. no hesitation in hanging such an image, as some have suggested. i know its not a new image, but that is a seperate issue - relating to quality of newer work. at the moment i'm only concerned with what print is available now, and i think pk is superb, IMhumbleO. As for the other 3, i wouldnt want them on my wall, so wont buy (even if i could afford). They arent a touch on MWIH and other eyestorms. ps - do you want +1's? ;D

micallef prints, by carlito on Sept 17, 2007 23:21:31 GMT 1, I think it's maybe a bit more basic.. substitute those beer bellied jumping blokes for mouse faced tennage girls and 99% of the board would be falling over themselves to get one. Quite funny I think..
great point Nu...I actually prefer these to the 'twee' previous images...but hey think I'm on my own with that opinion
